We came across some really good news that could potentially save millions of households hundreds of dollars, the news of a new generic version of the EpiPen called Adrenaclick, saving households $500 per prescription! We had to post this news about the new generic EpiPen option because so many people and households require the need for this medicine and it is a very expensive medicine.
In fact, since at least 1 in 50 Americans has an anaphylactic allergy, millions are carrying EpiPens to save their lives in case of accidental exposure to their deadly allergen.
We are one of those families.
Our daughter had anaphylactic peanut and tree nut allergies. Did you catch the past tense? Yes, she has been cured due to recent medical treatments. However, because she did have these and because anaphylaxis allergies can develop at any time, and because my mother-in-law is deathly allergic to bees, we still carry EpiPens just as if our daughter still deals with this threat every day. We don’t want to mess with this category of life and health.
Unfortunately, millions have paid a pretty penny for the epinephrine injectors made by Mylan, branded Epipen. We’ve been buying them every year for the past 11 years and they shot up in price back in 2007 and have been increasing every year since, with this last year being now over $600 prescription to fill.
Anyone that has to buy EpiPens is probably already aware of the price gouging on this life-saving drug. We chose to live on a tight budget so we can enjoy the things in life we chose to enjoy – but a $600 prescription for the just in case is insane! In fact, in the 11 years we’ve been filling this drug, we haven’t had to use it once – which we prefer and never want to have to use it as that would be a terrifying day. Regardless, it’s expensive life insurance!
So, when we came across this article today regarding a new generic version that is a 1/6th the price of EpiPens, we had to spread the news to our frugal friends. We would be so very happy to spend $109, vs. $608. That is a huge difference. Talk to your doctor and see if you can switch to this version instead to save loads of money.
Currently, the generic alternative to the EpiPen is Adrenaclick and is available at CVS pharmacies nationwide.
I am glad we saw this when we did because the year expiration date is nearly up to the EpiPens we currently have.
One trick we have done when we toss old EpiPens is we stab them in an orange. This allows us to practice with the real device and refresh ourselves on how to use them, plus we get a feel for what it’s like to do so. I am scared of the day I have to use it because it is a scary device with that giant needle, but I would be far more terrified to not have it and not use it. However, now our budget’s won’t be screaming in agony every year now that this new, generic version is available. 🙂
By the way. EpiPen use to provide a free carrying case for the EpiPens a few years ago. Then, they hiked up the prices and ditched the free case. So we went on the hunt for a new carrying case. The case we use to store our Epinephrine Injectors that also hold allergy meds, inhalers, etc. are the AllerMates cases – they are made for these injectors and attach to backpacks, diaper bags, purses, belt loops, etc.! We love this case. 🙂
Read our daughter’s story of how she was cured of her deadly peanut/tree nut allergies.

Cassie, Have no fear. 🙂 I used to be afraid to use my Epi Pen, as well, but discovered (when a nurse did it for me) that you don’t even feel the needle because it is so thin. You will feel the outside pressure of the pen on your thigh muscle but nothing inside. :). Thanks for the article!
Cassie
HI Michelle,
Thank you for sharing that! It is a terrifying device and so that is a little more reassuring. I figure in those cases of life or death, and giant needle prick will be the last thing on my mind. But, it does help the reality of stabbing my child with it a little more bearable. 🙂

It’s nice to see that more people are becoming aware that they do NOT need to be held hostage by Epi Pen’s skyrocketing costs. I’ve been a victim of this as well and a few years ago paid about $250. A few months ago when I went to renew the prescription, the Epi Pens were going to cost over $500! That’s just crazy. I refused to pay and contacted my insurance company. I discovered there is actually another generic epinephrine injector (not Adrenaclick’s) by Lineage Therapeutics. It looks and works exactly like the Epi Pen. But because it was the preferred device on my insurance company’s drug formulary, it only cost me $100. Adrenaclick generic can still be very pricey (over $300) if it’s not on your health insurance’s drug formulary, or if CVS is not a preferred pharmacy, so anyone with health insurance should contact their insurance company before purchasing any epinephrine injector to find out which brand is preferred and therefore cheapest. It’s a shame that it’s so confusing and causes so much more work for the average individual.

What wonderful news! I’ve carried the EpiPen for many yeas as well, but haven’t refilled my prescription because of the cost. It makes me a little nervous to not have one with me for my bee sting allergy! Thank you for posting about Adrenaclick! Do you happen to know if the $109 is only with certain insurance plans, or is that the base right for someone without insurance, like those of us on Samaritan Ministries?
Thanks!
Cassie
Hi Darrelyn,
That is a good question. I understood this to be the non-insurance price, so even better if you have insurance. We too have been on Samaritan Ministries in the past and will be going back on again soon when our other medical source runs out. So, I am assuming this is the cash price. If you find out differently, I would love to hear!

Fantastic blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option?
There are so many choices out there that I’m totally overwhelmed ..
Any tips? Thank you!
