This is just so cool! We came across an amazing detailed article regarding a coast to coast American trip by rail. And what a cool trip and an enjoyable read. In fact, it is such a great way to take a vacation, a family vacation or to travel for a lot less. It is not as fast as an airplane, but a more fun journey. It would be a great way to build some vacation memories.
We have taken short train rides to see the outdoor scenery and it was pure joy! But the longest was only like 2 hours. We took a winter wonderland train ride once through the snowy forests here in the Rocky Mountain West and it was memorable. So we could only imagine taking a train ride across the country!

But the even cooler part is the incredibly LOW cost! For a 3,400 mile journey from San Francisco to New York City, you can pay as little as $213 for it all! There are other routes too, but Derek in his post shares the whole journey in pictures and how you can replicate for a low cost. It was a super fun read! He was on the actual train for 4-days, but in some of his stops, like Chicago, he stayed for a few days to explore before departing on the next leg of his journey. That means you can make this trip in as little as 4-days one way, or longer if you want to literally see the country.
We loved his quote on his site regarding his experience:
Traveling by train gives you a glimpse into the soul of America. The experience rewards you with far more stories and experiences and sights than you could ever witness alone in a car, eyes fixed to the road, or on a five-hour flight across the country.
If you want to see tourist America, rent a Cadillac, get on Route 66 and stop off at a few cutesy diners and motels. If you want to see the real America in all its spectacular, crazy, kooky glory, get on the train.
We’ve been inspired to consider this option as one of our family vacations in the near future. It would be such a fun and memorable way to travel and one that would bring a lifetime of unique experiences not to mention the bargain price. Even just getting to NYC from our train stop is FAR less than a plane ticket, it would just take a few fun days. 🙂
