$10 Amazon.com gift card

It is that day of the week again – Friday!

How does Fun Fabulous Friday work?  Well, at the end of today one of our readers will win a $10 Amazon gift card.  You will need to enter to have a chance to win! You can get two possible entries each today.

Each week, we have had a fun topic for everyone to leave their quick comment/insight on.  It has been so much fun and help to read the awesome tips and comments that you all have.

This week is going to be – Fresh Produce Style!  Fresh produce savings is a hot topic around here and so we thought it would be awesome if everyone gave their tips on how each of you buy produce. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a thrifty tip.

Here are the two ways to enter. Make sure to leave a comment for each one as each one is a separate entry.

  1. This is the “mandatory” entry.  We love hearing from each of you and your tips.  So, this week we want to know your tips on buying produce.
  2. For your next entry, leave a second comment if you are a “liker” of The Thrifty Couple on Facebook.  Its not too late if you’re not a liker yet, just go to our page and click ‘Like’.  We also post extra deals and information on Facebook for our readers that you will not find on the site here.

We will share some of our tips when we make the announcement of the winner tomorrow!

This giveaway is for TODAY – Friday, August 20th ONLY! It ends at 11:59 MDT tonight! The winner will be announced on Saturday!

I’ve found success in planning to buy produce that is in season. Although most grocery chains carry most produce all year around, when something is ‘in season’ it’s usually tastier & less expensive.

I have found buying my produce in season and buying locally from farm stands gets me the best bang for my buck…as well as yummiest, freshest, and healthiest!

I purchase whatever fruit is in season as that’s when it is cheapest. If it’s not in season, most of the time I buy frozen.

I tend to buy “cheap” fruit in season, and do most of my produce shopping at Aldi. I buy big bags of fresh, cut broccoli at SAMS club; we eat a lot of broccoli since it has a high concentration of nutrients.

My lettuce is sold by the bag-not weight-so I try to find the heavier/bigger bag!

We buy in season and when the price is extra good, we buy more and freeze the excess. Thanks for the chance to win!

When I buy cilantro, I always untie it, spread it out in the plastic bag and place a paper towel on one side. It absorbs the moisture and the cilantro lasts longer.

We have this guy who sets up in my super small town. Everyone knows him and he gets really good veges and fruits. He sales them at a great price, so I try and buy from him. He enjoys seeing you and will always “throw” some extras in there.

We keep trying to raise some things. This year, not even the tomatoes have done well. Peppers have pretty much paid for themselves. We got hit with bugs really hard.

Otherwise, we buy leaf lettuce, greens, and whatever is affordable. Very little canned. Mostly frozen. Fruit is a luxury if it isn’t apple or banana.

I go to the local farmers market. Seems like they are a bit cheaper and I can also support my local farmer.

I attempt to grow my some of my own produce every summer. Other than that, I go to our local flea market & buy from a local farmer. If the prices are really good, I’ll stock up on items that I can freeze, such as bell peppers, potatoes, corn, apples, blueberries, etc.

We live near several orchards and you-pick farms, so we try to buy in-season local produce. Then we freeze or can what we can’t use fresh.

I always buy fruit when it’s in season. I like to grate fresh zucchini and freeze it. Each zucchini is about 2 cups and that’s the perfect amount for most zucchini bread recipes. Then when winter comes, we make zucchini mini loaves and give them away as gifts.

Find a good local produce market and then stick with them. We have been very loyal customers at our local produce market for many years and in return we always get lots of freebies and discounts.

I buy seasonal produce and freeze what I can to preserve it. For instance, spinach, pineapple, all berries, mangos, grapes, melon and broccoli all are great frozen. My husband and I make “green smoothies” with leafy greens, as well as, a lot of fruits so it does become costly. I buy what I can in bulk, refrigerate most of it, freeze some of it, and leave the rest of the produce out to ripen at room temperature. None of the produce I buy goes bad on my watch :)

I like to buy produce that is in season and especially when on sale. I take a good look at it because it is no fun to get home and find moldy strawberries or blueberries in the container! Also, I will shop at Aldi and most of the time their produce is pretty good, but you have to take a good look.

Which store I go to in a given week is partly dictated by who is having the best produce sales. I buy what is in season and on sale, and am open to bringing something home that I haven’t tried before if it is a good price. And, I don’t buy bagged salad unless some major life upheaval is in progress! Leaf lettuce is way cheaper and most often better quality.
