We wanted to share a quick cookie hack with you for Thanksgiving. You can use an acorn shaped cookie cutter to create turkey face cookies.

Along with this easy tutorial, we will provide a “from scratch” sugar cookie recipe. But you can use any sugar cookie recipe you would like.

Finally, we are going to share the royal frosting recipe as this is needed to take on the shape of the turkey cookie.

How to Make Turkey Face Cookies from Acorn Shaped Cookie Cutter

Cookie Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 C flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tarter
  • 1 1/2 C powder sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 C unsalted sweet cream butter, room temp
  • Cookie cutter shaped like an acorn (like this one)

Icing Ingredients:

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 C powder sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Brown, red, black, and yellow gel food coloring

Cookie Directions:

-Cream the butter, sugar, vanilla, and egg until well combined with an electric mixer.
-Scoop the dry ingredients in another bowl mixing as you add.
-Add the dry ingredients slowly into the wet ingredients. Mixing until combined.
-Make  the dough into a ball (if the dough is still sticky add a half cup of flour and remix until a firm ball of dough can form).
-Place the dough into a zip lock bag or into a bowl covered with cling wrap.
-Put the dough in the refrigerator for 2 hours so that it can slightly rise.
-Toss some flour on a cutting board and on a rolling pin.
-Put the chilled dough on the cutting board and using the rolling pin begin to roll the dough out.
-Begin using the cookie cutter to cut out the cookies.  (if the dough gets too sticky then put back into the refrigerator to chill before cutting out more cookies).

Icing Directions:

-Separate the egg yolk from the white, placing the whites of the eggs into a mixing bowl.  Put the egg yolks into a storage container for use later.
-Add in the sugar, cream of tarter and vanilla with the egg whites beating for 6 minutes of medium speed.
-If the icing has a yellow color or resembles soup gradually add in about one more cup of powder sugar.

To Decorate Like A Turkey Face:

-Start by taking out 2 TBSP of icing, place it in the first bowl adding black gel food coloring, mixing well for the eye ball.
-Take out 4 TBSP of icing putting it into the second bowl leaving it white for the eyes.
-Remove another 6 TBSP of icing into third bowl adding several drops of red gel food coloring, mix well.
-Divide the remaining icing into two bowls.
-In the  fourth bowl add in several drops of brown gel food coloring.  Stir to mix the color throughout the white icing.
-Scoop about a third of the brown icing into a piping bag with a #2 tip to outline the  top of the cookie.
-With the remaining brown icing add 1-3 TBSP of water (start with 1 TBSP first as you want it to be thick and runny, not like soup) If the icing does appear to be “soup” like then add 1/4 cup
of powder sugar to thicken it.
-Spoon some of the brown thinner icing onto the cookie, spread this icing on the cookie, except for the cheek and peak,(the lower part of the cookie)  using a knife.
-Drop a dot of white icing directly on the face of the turkey allowing it to bleed slightly into the brown to make an eye. Then directly following this add another smaller drop of brown icing for another part of the eye.  The last step for the eye is to add a smaller dot of black icing for the eyeball.
-Allow this to dry for about 30 seconds.
-In the  fifth bowl add in several drops of golden yellow gel food coloring.  Stir to mix the color throughout the white icing.
-Scoop about a third of the yellow icing into a piping bag with a #2 tip to outline the bottom of the cookie.

-With the remaining yellow icing add 1-3 TBSP of water (start with 1 TBSP first as you want it to be thick and runny, not like soup) If the icing does appear to be “soup” like then add 1/4 cup
of powder sugar to thicken it.
-Spoon some of the yellow thinner icing onto the cookie, spread this icing on the cookie the using a knife.
-Allow this to dry for about 30 seconds.
-Use the picture of the cookie as an example of the turkey.  Allow this to dry for a minute or two.
-Scoop the red icing into a piping bag with a #2 tip.
-Add the red icing for the waddle on the turkey.

-Allow the icing on the cookie to dry for 5-10 hours.

This is a great project to begin learning the art of cookie decorating!
