Biscuits and gravy is the classic American breakfast staple.  It is cheap, easy, tasty, warm, comfort food! Well, we want to share a homemade version that gives you some cheaper, some healthier and some gluten-free options so that all can enjoy this breakfast classic!

For the biscuits:

  • You can save time by using canned biscuits.  Works well for those busy mornings!
  • You can make homemade ones that are really easy with little time.
  • You can also make homemade gluten-free biscuits by replacing the flour in our recipe with this gluten-free flour mix.  This mix makes for amazing gluten-free baked goods – they come out fluffy, tasty and will hardly notice that it is gluten-free.

Homemade Biscuits Recipe Ingredients:

    • 2 cups of flour (or gluten-free flour)
    • 1 TBSP of baking powder
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1/2 cup of shortening
    • 3/4 cup of milk

To Make Homemade Biscuits:

  • Mix flour, salt and baking powder
  • Then cut in the shortening with a fork until it’s coarse and crumbly
  • Then add the milk and mix until the dough is soft and sticks together
  • Dump the mix onto a floured surface and toss in the flour until the dough is soft and not sticky
  • Roll the dough out and cut with a biscuit cutter…. or what I do – a glass.
  • Keep rolling out the dough from the bits left until you have no more dough and just biscuit shapes
  • Put on ungreased baking sheet about 1″ apart and bake for 10 minutes at 450 degrees (until golden brown)

I have also made drop biscuits to save a lot of time.  They are not as fluffy, but just as tasty! Follow the recipe above and just drop by spoonfuls onto the pan instead of making biscuit shapes.

Now on with the gravy!

First, we want to share a tip on the sausage that we have shared before.  We shared our natural (no preservatives, nitrate-free, msg-free) sausage that is cheap and how you can get 26 breakfasts worth for $19!

See the post on the sausage HERE

We have used only this sausage for 3+ years now because any breakfast recipe that has had sausage, this has been a great option.  And with it pre-cooked, much of the time in the kitchen is saved! This is also the most expensive part of breakfast, but as we share, this is a more natural, convenient way to go and it is affordable!

The next frugal trick is using the SOS mix that we talk about all of the time to make your gravy! This is the miracle mix that replaces all of your creamed canned soups, cheese sauces, gravies and other sauces.  We use it many times per week and have saved loads of money over the years by using this instead.

So the 3 main things needed are the sausage, SOS mix for the gravy and the biscuits.  I just shared how to quickly and very frugally have all of this on hand and ready to go for a super yummy, hearty, healthy and even gluten-free breakfast!

Alex is the big biscuits and gravy fan in our house.  It is his favorite!

Once you have the sausage cooked and the SOS mix made, then you can throw this breakfast together very quickly, even by making homemade biscuits.

Here’s how to make it:

    • Make your biscuits.
    • While your biscuits are baking, you will want to make your gravy. The BEST thing to do is to create SOS mix. We have talked about this miracle mix over-and-over again.  It is really a kitchen miracle! This base will make cheese sauces, gravies and cream soups very quickly. Basically, you can make this dry mix and replaced many, many canned goods! The white gravy recipe is on the SOS page HERE.
    • Once you make your white gravy, you want to add the sausage crumbles and stir until warmed and well mixed!
    • Then just place your warm biscuit on a plate and ladle gravy over the top and enjoy!

*Please note: to make it gluten-free, when you make your roux for your gravy, you will want to use the gluten-free flour again.

Oh man that looks good. I do miss comfort food from the US, and this is one I can probably make here in Thailand. I make drop biscuits all of the time, just never thought about making the gravy. YUM!
