Bountiful Baskets for August 14th – Organic and Bountiful Indeed

August 14 by Cassie 21 Comments

august 14 bountiful basket

Thrifty Al picked up our next Bountiful Basket! As usual, we order the organic basket for $25.  You can also get a conventional basket for $15 through this particular co-op – Bountiful Baskets, which is in many western states. You can see previous examples of what we have received in our baskets before.

Also, being a part of a produce co op or grocery co op means that you never know what you are going to get! Each time it is something different, which we happen to love! They are usually 50% fruit and 50% veggies.

Here’s what we got this week:

  • 3 Organic Romaine Hearts
  • 4 Organic tomatoes
  • 1 Organic broccoli
  • 3 Organic Mangoes
  • 1 bunch Organic Radishes
  • 6 Organic Pears
  • A pile of Yellow Organic Beans
  • 6 Organic Peaches
  • 6 Organic Bananas
  • 4 Organic Cucumbers
  • 1 bag Organic Red Grapes
  • 6 heads of Organic ???

We are not sure what the veggie item is in the top left corner?  We will need to look it up or maybe you could help us??? We have 6 of them – we hope we like them after we learn what they are and how to prepare them.

Last time we received a mystery veggie – with your help we figured out what it was. We prepared it with highly recommended recipes, but ended up not liking it at all 🙁 It was Fennel and the licorice flavor was too much for us.  That was the first time we had an item we didn’t like, but we only received one of them. Hopefully this is a good and yummy veggie as we got so many of it 😉 If you know what it is ….. please leave a comment as we would love to know too!

As usual, we did want to mention a few words about how to get involved in a produce co-op.  We really feel like this has been a key for us to be able to stick in our budget, receive great quality fresh produce and Organic items to boot! YAY!

There are many produce co-ops and grocery co op groups and it’s various forms across the nation that you can join and be a part of.  A good place to start looking is at a the site localharvest.org (which id going to help you get organic local food) or coopdirectory.org (I am not sure how updated this site is as our area’s listings were old and many not listed, but at least worth a shot!) or search produce co-op your state under google and see what listings come up. Also, Money Saving Mom posted an article on how to start your own produce co-op, especially if you could not find one in your area.

hey! i’m pretty sure that veggie is Bok Choy (many different spellings, including Pak Choi.) if that’s the case, it’s very mild and “likeable.” i like it cooked with soy sauce. it’s a good one!

I second that it is bok choy. It is delicious! Throw it in your stir fry, steam it, boil it, slice it in half and broil it. We loved it when we got it a few months ago in the regular basket.

      Ruthie and Cheryl,

That sounds great! Actually – we were just planning our weekly menu and we had red, yellow and green peppers from our Target trip earlier this week and so we were going to make stir-fry tomorrow. We will now add that to it. Isn’t it so exciting to try new produce?!?! I probably wouldn’t have gone out on my own to buy it at the store. Heck – I didn’t even know what it was! Thrifty Al’s favorite dish is Stir-Fry (see his recipe) so I guess he is going to add this in tomorrow 😉

I got a conventional basket this morning. This is the first time I have participated. I like (and know how to use!) everything I got. I also picked up some bread which is really delicious. Thanks for letting us know about Bountiful Baskets.

    I received:
    1 romaine heart
    6 ears corn
    3 tomatoes
    2 eggplant
    3 zucchini
    1 lb carrots
    1 cantaloupe
    5 pears
    8 bananas
    1 lb strawberries
    6 pluots
    1 bag red grapes

Oh good – We love Bountiful Baskets! We are in Utah so we were curious if it was a Utah basket or where from? We are so happy to hear it is spreading to other states.

Jennie from Bargain Blessings is soooo awesome! We absolutely love her and have had the chance to meet her in person twice and visit with her – she is so sweet, kind and genuine! Her site is wonderful!
