A couple of months ago, we told you about megabus.com being a great frugal travel option as an alternative to flying, trains, or even city-center to city-center travel options too.

Well, we just learned about their safety features as well, which is sometimes a concern when travelling by bus, especially the lack of seat belts.

So when we read about how megabus.com had voluntarily added seat belts to all of their buses in 2007, we were intrigued to find out more information about what makes their form of transportation so unique.

This all came to light to us because we also found out that April is Distracted Driver Awareness month. It’s okay, we didn’t know either.  But the main focus of the message for Distracted Driving Month is to bring awareness to drivers and offer ideas, alternatives and ways to eliminate distractions on the road.

As a mom and dad to six littles, distracted driving in our day and age is a real fear. I hate going out on the road! It’s scary out there friends!

So as The Thrifty Couple, we thought we would do our part for the Distracted Driver Awareness Month and share a few things as well.

First, the National Safety Council has a great video and resources on distracted driving and how you can reduce your risks on the road to not only you, your passengers, but to the others on the road. We live in a day and age where our phones are literally taking over our lives in every area; when they take us over on the road (literally) that can result in dire consequences. Please be cognizant of the road and not your phones. The video shows why even relying on voice applications and hands-free communication is not even a risk-free practice. It is still dangerous.

In addition, since we have mentioned megabus.com before and the frugal value that it is for many traveling and commuting, they are joining in on raising awareness for Distracted Driver Awareness month by encouraging people to travel via megabus.com to reduce risks and reduce distracted driving.

Traveling by megabus.com is also a great alternative to driving or flying because it is super affordable way to travel anyway. Most tickets are $14-$40 for long trips and even around $1 for city trips. That’s a significant savings for travel!

Plus, they have implemented many safety features for their drivers and their buses so that you can enjoy your distractions and get where you need to go without putting anyone in danger.

Here’s the steps they have taken in the last 10-years to promote green, frugal, safer travel (information provided to us from megabus.com):

1. Megabus.com has invested $1.5M in a central support system which monitors all the buses activities in real time supported by a staff 24-7.  With a SmartTire alert system, speeding alerts, real time and GPS tracking. The GPS tracking system allows megabus.com to identify any low bridges and automatically lowers the suspension when going through planned routes with low clearance, like the Lincoln Tunnel.
2. They put seat belts in all buses in 2007, which is not currently a federal requirement.
3. They instituted a policy requiring  two drivers onboard between 12 and 5 a.m. and drivers are required to take nine hours off in between shifts instead of the required eight hours.
4. Megabus.com utilizes GreenRoad Eco-Driving Technology: GreenRoad gives drivers the information, tools and motivation they need to drive safer. The system detects risky maneuvers and warns drivers so they can self-correct in real-time. GreenRoad analyzes more than 150 maneuvers, across 5 categories – acceleration, braking, lane changing, cornering, and speeding.  At the management level, powerful analytic tools let megabus.com identify potentially hazardous areas and problematic trends before they lead to serious incidents.

So, while you are at looking for your travel plans in 2016, consider the safety tips from the National Safety Council, be aware and avoid your distractions and make necessarily precautions/plans to eliminate those distractions while driving.

And if you cannot, will you consider using megabus.com to commute or travel for your safe, yet frugal travel options?

Have you tried traveling by megabus.com before?

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of megabus.com. The opinions and text are all mine.
