We also went to Walmart and Target this week to grab a few things at each store! The kids and I had an afternoon of fun shopping adventures, along with a meal out! It was a really nice time and they did well marching around the 2 stores!
We have been slowly moving into more organic and natural options when and where we can! We first started with our meats and have been purchasing the natural and organic selections in most cases, then onto our produce (and utilizing local produce co-ops to ease the cost of organic produce) and transitioning more and more each week! Our goal is to make this transition, while sticking within our budget of $60 a week for the 6 of us. This budget needs to cover our groceries, toiletries, household and diapers! Thus far, we have stuck within our budget – at $60 a week, this equates to $240 a month. This is important to note as some weeks we spend $30 while another we may spend $90, but in the end it averages to $240 a month or less!! Thus far, we have been able to make this transition and remain within our budget!! Yay! The biggest expense in this transition has been the meats as the organic meats are significantly more expensive. Rarely are there coupons, but we just stock up when we find a good deal, which means markdowns most of the time!! Anyway, at both Walmart and Target, we found organic meat on markdown!! It also meant that we spent a lot more than $60 to stock up on these deals, but still within our $240 a month!!
Here’s a picture of what we bought at our quick trip to Walmart:

We had a VERY exciting trip to Target as one of our favorite types of beef was on sale this week! Laura’s Lean Ground Sirloin is normally $5.99 a pound. They were on markdown at Target for only $2 each!! They had a TON of it at this price as they needed to sell them, so we stocked up and purchased 12 of them!! Also, we went in with a list and our budget in mind, knowing that we can break it for prime stock up opportunities, with that in mind, there were a number of all natural and/or organic products that were marked down – it seriously was the day for us to hit Target with our goal of transitioning!! YAY!!
We spent a lot more than we planned, but it was one of the most exciting shopping trips for us in recent weeks because of the marked down treasures we found! The items with the “*” are the treasures we found and that were not on our original list!
Here’s a picture of our Target trip:
All of the items smashed into one picture
Close up of the right side of the table 😉
Here’s a breakdown of what we bought:

Close up of the ground beef!
- *12 1-lb. packages of Lauras Lean Beef regularly $5.99 $71.88 marked down to $2 each = $24.00. Then used 2 $1/1 printable = final is $22.00 for 12 or $1.83 each!!
Summary: The total AFTER sales, clearances, markdowns and temporary price cuts was $94.88. We then used $34.04 in coupons , which made our final total $60.84!! Our receipt shows that we saved $81.45 between the coupons and store sales = 58% savings, however, it is NOT factoring in the savings on the clearance and markdowns as they just show the final price it was marked, which was about half of the items! So considering that just in the beef and olive oil alone, we saved $70.38!! There is a good chance that we could have saved over 75-80%! YAY!!!

I’m glad to see you’re trying to move to organic. You’ve had a few posts, recently, that made me cringe (Cool Whip and Jell-O come to mind). I hope that, as you move toward healthier choices, you also cut out these highly processed “treats” – no matter what kind of savings you score. Have you read what’s in Cool Whip?? I wouldn’t touch it, even if it’s free.

Agreed. I have a friend who worked for Kraft Foods. She said they “engineered” Cool Whip to be able to survive being frozen then thawed and not lose its “whippiness”. It’s horrible processed garbage, run away from it as fast as you can, do not put it in your body. I think that she has probably moved away from this stuff by now. I think when people are new to organics, they don’t quite get it but I’m sure she must by now.

Something else to ponder…plastic has a lot of weird things in it.
Try moving towards not putting your veggies in plastic bags. There is NO reason to put them in bags.
