Cheap Travel: Enjoy A Staycation and Save Big Money

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy here.

by Cassie on July 12, 2011

staycation sign

It’s that time of year when you have that burning/aching feeling of wanting a vacation, but your budget is screaming at you to not wreak any more havoc or it is going to burst! It is that struggle that puts you between a rock and a hard place – to vacation and stress and pay later or not!

We have been down this road too many times with our budget, or rather lack of budget and the bank account screaming at us not to do anymore damage! In fact, travel and vacationing was one of the top factors in contributing to the deep in the red debt load that we carried for a few years. Those relaxing, stress relieving vacations became one of the most stressful annoyances later as we had the bill to pay that was accumulating interest at alarming rates.  It was a big weakness of ours as we love to travel!

So a few years ago, we were in the heart of paying off the enourmous mountain of consumer debt and we were itching for a vacation.  We sat down and tried to figure out what we could “squeeze” in and still be on track with paying off the debts! With a measly $200 to work with, what could we do for a week?

How about a Staycation!! What is a Staycation? It is a vacation in your town of residence or the nearby big city! Not only will you save loads of money, make wonderful memories, but you may actually get to see the tourist attractions where you live! This can be a rare commodity for many residents!

How did we do it?  Well… quite simply actually!

Alex took a whole week of work and we treated it as a vacation week in every sense of the word. We told everyone we were on vacation, we “unplugged” and had a real vacation, although home was just right here! Our home transformed into a “serve yourself” bed and breakfast.

Here are some tips from our experience:

  • Since we only had $200 to work with at that time, we decided to make the hotel our home – we would leave early and come home right before bedtime!
  • For the meals, we ate most breakfasts at home nearly every morning, packed most lunches and enjoyed the dinners out.  When we ate out, the benefit of being in our own area was that we had very easy access to buy one get one free coupons from places like the Entertainment Book and other local restaurant coupon resources! Every meal out was discounted!
  • We took advantage of many of the FREE museums, park events, summer concerts and free outdoor activities.

kids city water attraction

  • We also visited our Capital building, and public city buildings.  We love to explore history and government as a family and the kids loved seeing the Capital and the big city library in our area is beautiful! These are FREE buildings to visit!

UT capital building

  • We also rode public transportation in the “free” zones to explore everything downtown.

  • We also visited a handful of attractions that required an entrance fee, but we were able to use coupons and discounts for every attraction.

  • Our “splurge” on the last night was Chuck E Cheese.  Alex really despises this place, but the kids really wanted to go so he said they could! We used coupons of course and other discounts! Read our previous post on How To Save at Chuck E Cheese.

The moral of the story…. we had a wonderful, relaxing, enjoyable Staycation, stayed on budget, made awesome memories, and learned much more about our state than we had for the previous several years we lived here! In the end, we didn’t have credit card bills to remember our vacation by and no “after” stress to deal with! Oh – and our young kids slept well and were in good moods each day because of it unlike they would have in a strange place, so that was a perk too!

That is what we did and how we did! But there are MANY ways to have a staycation, here are a few more tips depending on what your budget will allow:

  • For Accommodations:  Stay 1 night in a hotel of your staycation for the swim/hotel experience, camp out as a family in the family room in your house or in a tent outside!
  • For meals:  Pack picnics, use coupons for your favorite restaurants, pack plenty of snacks and water even if you choose to eat out every meal as those snacks and water add up FAST!
  • For activities:  Be sure to check any memberships you have to local attractions for any additional venues.  We have memberships to a local children’s museum that we visit regularly, but our membership card gives us free or discounted admission to many other attractions in the area that we do not visit normally and perfect for discounts on the staycation! Check the websites of the attractions and get on the email lists for potential discounts.  And of course utilize your Entertainment Book or other local coupon resources.
  • Visit the free attractions like the public buildings we mentioned above or parks you haven’t been to before. Visit your state’s sites and visitor centers for attractions as well as a list of FREE Attractions across the country to help you plan your staycation! One day, we went to the visitor’s center in our area and received a free walking-tour map that we were able to do and enjoy!

To plan the perfect staycation:

  1. Set a Budget and STICK TO IT!!
  2. Have a family meeting to find out from each member what one thing they would love to do and see if you can fit it in with the time and budget allotted!
  3. Remind yourself that you are on vacation and treat it as such!
  4. Have fun, take pictures, make memories and relax!!

Have you ever had a staycation?  What was your favorite part and share any tips you have in the comments!

Six Ways on How To Save On Theme Park and Disney Souvenirs

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy here.

by Cassie on January 11, 2011

minnie ears disney small

Here is the final article and savings tips that we wanted to share with you from our recent vacation to Southern California and Theme Parks. As many of you know, the week between Christmas and New Year’s, we enjoyed an 11-day family vacation that we all worked hard to save up for and to celebrate all of our family’s work to become debt-free.

With that in mind, we obviously wanted to use as many deals and savings to make it an affordable vacation! We have shared how we saved on accommodations, how we saved on food, how we saved on theme park tickets, so now we wanted to share some tips on how we saved on souvenirs!

Here are some ideas on ways to save on souvenirs from Theme Parks!

  • Buy before you leave: If you are looking for souvenirs to a specific theme park, you may be able to purchase themed items online!  The best example is the Disney Store online for Disney souvenirs.  We knew before we left that we wanted to get the official autograph books and the official Mickey ears with the names embroidered on back for each of the kids.  We also shopped the clearance section at the time on the DisneyStore for any more potential souvenirs.  For the hats and autograph books, they were not on sale (as suspected :) ) but we did have a coupon code for 20% off and FREE shipping. This meant that not only did we save money on the in-park prices, but an additional discount on top of that with FREE shipping!  In the end, we were in our Southern California beach condo on Christmas and we made these souvenirs part of the Christmas morning for the kids.  It was sweet and they loved it! While at the park, we had a number of people ask us where we had our hats personalized because the personalized names were thick and very good quality – we realized that all around us there were personalized Mickey ears with very thin strands of thread for the names.  So not only did we save money, but we ended up with better quality hats!  Make sure you search on Google for the theme park you are shopping for or even ebay!
  • Buy off-site: Most theme parks, Disney included, will have a number of souvenir shops that are ran independently from the park, but carry many souvenirs related to the park! The prices and deals they offer will be much, much lower than the parks themselves.
  • Watch for coupons and specials on souvenirs in the park: Keep your eyes peeled everywhere while you are at the park for coupons, discounts or specials on souvenirs.  As an example, on the bottom of our receipt from one of the dinners we had in the park (using that awesome 30% off coupon we found before leaving) there was an attached coupon for 20% off any purchase in specific gift shops in the park.
  • Buy unofficial merchandise: If it is not important to you, buy generic or unofficial souvenirs.  Again most of these will be found in local shops outside of the parks.
  • Get creative: Some of the best, cheapest and most memorable souvenirs might not have to cost hardly anything! The pressed pennies that you can find at theme parks, historical spots, national parks and more are a very fun and inexpensive way to go! Also, postcards are another fabulous way to go for cheap and inexpensive items.  We also like to find magnets and ornaments for locations we have visited as a family souvenir and a fun way to remember our vacation. Also, the Disney characters can sign (I think!) anything, not just official Disney autograph books. So if you buy a postcard (or a few), the Disney Characters can sign them!  Collect maps, ticket stubs, schedules for the days you visited and any other “free” materials, especially if you are a scrapbooker (like me)!  Another creative souvenir is if you eat in or around any of the theme parks restaurants, they will often give kids water cups in those plastic cups with the theme park characters, logos, etc. This happened at Sea World for us, the kids each got a FREE kids cup with pictures of Shamu all over them!
  • If you want to splurge in the parks, be sure to set a budget for each family member! Sometimes it is just plain fun to let everyone grab something there at the parks; just have a budget set aside and discussed before leaving so everyone knows their limitations and expectations.

What we did:

  • The only official Disney items we wanted were the personalized hats and autograph books. Again we purchased them off the Disney Store online with a 20% coupon code and FREE shipping!  Right now is a great time to shop on the Disney Store online as this week they are offering FREE shipping.  So check the sales and clearances and see if there is anything you would want to pick up as a souvenir (or just because!).  We also bought a Disney plush for each of them that was on clearance plus 20% off and FREE shipping.
  • We also like to grab ornaments or magnets and we were able to get a Disneyland 2010 ornament on clearance for 60% off on the Disney Store online! Perfect!
  • Then, as we mentioned in the food post, we actually took in our own tummy ticklers that have a character hard plastic topper that were Disney Characters.  Official Disney Souvenir cups sell in the parks for $5-$10, but bought our “souvenir tummy ticklers” (granted not official Disney Souvenir Cups, but our young kids didn’t know the difference) for .33 each.
  • Finally, we collected the “free” things like the park maps, our ticket cards, our own photographs, the kids cups, stickers that “cast members” were handing out and other little fun things like this.

Hope these tips help to save you money on those souvenirs! Don’t forget that your own pictures and memories are a form of souvenirs too!

To catch up on more of our vacation savings:

As a side note – the DisneyStore.com is giving FREE shipping with no minimum order this whole week (use coupon code: FREESHIP). Shop the sales and clearances to grab some deals!  They are having a 60% off clearance right now!

Our Vacation and 10 Ways on How To Save On Theme Park Tickets Like Disneyland and Sea World and Our Tiny (ok HUGE) Mistake

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy here.

by Alex on January 7, 2011

theme park ticket discounts

As many of you may know, we were on vacation for 11 days, just arriving home earlier this week.  We spent the majority of our time in Southern California in great “beach condo living” for CHEAP!

While we were there, we decided to head to some theme parks for a few days of the trip.  We took this trip as our vacation, but also as a family celebration for getting out of our loads of debt (and took the trip debt-free too after saving to pay cash for it).

We went to Disneyland for 3 days that week between Christmas and New Year 2011. We had limited computer time, but we did tell you a bit about it when we could. But before we tell you about how we purchased our tickets and share our ideas for you to get discounts to these and possibly other theme parks/attractions – we need to address something that could be on many of your minds.

With that in mind, if any of you were reading our site while we were gone and about how we were planning to visit Disneyland during this time, you were probably at home laughing and saying to yourself, “this is not the thrifty couple but instead the stupid couple.”

I will be the first to humbly admit that this was a really stupid time to go.  Why? Well it is historically the busiest and highest traffic time at the Disneyland (and Disney World) resorts.  By our admission, we knew this fact in the beginning of the planning but didn’t realize just how crazy it would really be!

As a family we discussed when we wanted to go – our family thought this would be a great time and a memorable way to celebrate the holidays too.  It was perfect for my work schedule as it meant less days of vacation I had to take.  Then to top it off – we found and incredible deal on one of the major expenses (accommodations) and so it was all working out beautifully.

We knew it was called “peak time” as when we were researching our accommodation deals, it is best to travel on non-peak times.  But we were blessed to find a deal that was cheaper than we could have thought, especially during “peak season.”  As crazy as it is, we were celebrating the fact that this condo deal came through at this time even though the idea of “peak season” did not seem to drum up the idea that this also equates to “peak people.”

First, bit of advice – do not go during a “peak season” even if you are blessed to grab unbelievable deals on for the trip during this time – the amounts of people in the parks will off-set your deal seeking excitement. If we ever have the opportunity to go to a Disney park again, we will be sure to check the traffic trends first.  Although the amount of traffic in the park was almost unbearable, we somehow managed to use a few tricks to maximize our time as much as possible and do everything, but a small handful of things, that we wanted to do.  If you would like us to share some strategies that we quickly developed, then just let us know and we can make it a separate post.

Here are 10  Ways to Save on Theme Park Tickets.

These would apply for any Theme Park (not just Disney) that you and your family are interested in going to!

  1. Check directly on the theme park’s websites. In this day and age, if a company is offering a discount, it will most likely be found somewhere on their website!
  2. If you are a part of any of these groups, then check on a AAA, AARP, Military,  Sam’s Club or Costco. We have found that you can get a discount to most theme parks through one (or all) of these outlets!
  3. Check with your local banks and credit unions, even if the theme park is not local. What I mean is that we have a lot of credit unions in our area and the area we grew up in. Neither are close to Disneyland, but they offer discounts and discount packages to Disney and other Theme parks.
  4. If you are planning to stay multiple days and hit multiple attractions, then consider a multi-day pass or a multi-attraction pass. Theme parks like Universal Studios or SeaWorld have offered “buy one day, get one free.”  Disney’s park hopper passes are cheaper and cheaper each day the more days you purchase. Also, the CityPass is a popular way to go (for visiting multiple attractions) as you save 30% right off the top going through CityPass directly.  You can actually get discounts on the CityPass itself through AAA, Costco and more!
  5. Have a travel agent work up a deal! Contact your local travel agents and tell them that you are looking for discounts galore and see what they quote you for a price! You never know, but they might actually be able to grab bigger discounts with their insider information than you can find!
  6. Check on the discount prices using your Entertainment Book. This little (BIG) book is not only filled with coupons to your local businesses, but both in the book and then access your online account as there will be many more offers online, including many theme parks!
  7. Check with local (to the theme park) restaurants/businesses, Coke Cans/Convenience Store Cups, etc. We live near Lagoon Amusement Park and many local fast food restaurants, in addition to the Coke cans distributed in our area and convenience store cups will have a coupon for a discount into this local park. Even when we were down in CA, we ate at Wendy’s (using our free fries coupons) and noticed that the drink cups down there had an $8 discount to SeaWorld or San Diego Zoo. So you could potentially find these all over the local area of the theme park.
  8. If you are local to the theme park, consider season passes, going with a large group for a group discount (this could work if you are not local and going on a road trip with a large group too!), or even checking with your employer for a discount! One of my previous employers corporate offices are based out of San Diego. They offered discount tickets to the San Diego attractions, even for their employees in other offices across the country.
  9. As a risky option, but potentially very big savings, consider buying multi-day tickets from classifieds, Craig’s List or Ebay. Often times, people will buy a 5 or 6 day pass but only use 2 or 3 days and so the remaining days are still good.  The tickets are good for a two-week period typically for Disney and so as long as you are going before they expire, then you could have found a treasure of a deal.  I call this risky because we researched this option online, and found many places where people got a steal of a deal, but they have no way of verifying if there really is 2 or 3 days left until they get down to the park. In some cases, they were “scammed”and stuck at that point. They were out the money on those tickets and paying full price at the gate.  But… I am mentioning it with caution.
  10. Similar (but safer) to the above option, if you know someone going and plan to go shortly after them, consider going in on a 6 day ticket and sharing the tickets. If this is pre-arranged with someone you know, you would probably be safe from scammers!

One big thing to consider when seeking out a discount is: “What are the restrictions on your discount tickets?” and consider the “nickel and dime” expenses. Answering this question can save you from regret later as some discount tickets might not be all that they are cracked up to be!

  • Is there certain times only that you can enter (time of day, season, blackout dates, etc.)?
  • How much will the parking be?
  • Are there rides/attractions that are not available with this ticket?
  • Any other restrictions or considerations that you need to weigh?

With all of that in mind, we recommend taking a quick look at all ten ideas above and then selecting your best option from the list!

So with the above list and our research, here’s exactly what we did:

We went with AAA because we were able to snag the CityPass (as we were visiting multiple parks) for a discount.  But here were the other things that came with it:

  • Free parking at Disney in the parking garage.  Considering that it costs $15 a day to park there, this was an additional $45 savings for us.
  • Preferred seating tickets to many of the shows at Disney.  I can’t tell you how much we appreciated this during those “peak days.” Most shows had two lines, one for preferred seating ticket holders and one for everyone else.  They let all of the preferred seating ticket holders go find seats first before they let everyone else in! We had the absolute best seats in the house of Aladdin (we asked one of the cast members where the best seats were and followed their advice, since we were one of the first in the theater, although one of the last to get in line, we got those seats!).  Some theaters, it was a reserved row for the preferred ticket holders, so no matter how full the theaters got, we could walk right up and walk through the rope to the preferred rows.
  • It also included a discount card that we could show and use in Disney, Downtown Disney, and surrounding restaurants and businesses for 10% discount. Although we had other plans for eating and souvenirs (which we will share next), we didn’t end up using this, but if we didn’t have our plan, this would have been very handy!
  • It also included one day of early admission (1-hour before the public) into Disney. I think most discount tickets still offer this and comes with all 3-day park hopper passes.

So there is a very lengthy, but hopefully helpful post on how to save on theme park tickets for many different types of attractions! Please share any ideas that you have done too!

And for a funny sidenote, see the report that the Orange County Register did on Tuesday, December 28th when then closed the gates 2 hours after opening from meeting capacity.  The pictures are very much what we experienced the day before (when they also closed the gates)! We actually did not end up at the Park on Tuesday like planned due to our bump in the roadgood thing!  We went Monday, Wednesday and Thursday that week.

Our 2010 Vacation: How We Saved On Food

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy here.

by Cassie on December 31, 2010

So we are still on vacation and having wonderful (highly needed) family time.

We have been on vacation since the 23rd, and so with a vacation that long – the food bill could be outrageous, especially for a family of 6.

Since we are The Thrifty Couple, we would like to share what we have done to trim the vacation food bill this round.  There are many, many ideas, but here’s specifically what we did for this trip.

First and most important to us for our personal vacation food budget is being able to grab that condo for a dealWhy was this important? Well not only does it save sanity, more relaxing for us and more – it actually saves potentially hundreds in food over a several day vacation.  And it can also provide ways to eat healthier as well!

With that out of the way, here’s what we did:

For the first several days, we were just in our condo on the beach and enjoyed the local sites and sounds.  This allowed for us to eat in at the condo.  We had breakfast, lunch and dinner here when we could.  We went to Walmart and Albertson’s when we got here in Southern California and took our coupon binder with us and shopped the food for the week.  Although we spent about double our weekly grocery budget (as we are buying the things we need now, not just grabbing the great deals and stocking up and eating from our stock-pile like we normally do), it saved us hundreds for the week, plus even more with the coupons we were able to use!

Our meals we were able to eat inside the condo included:

  • Lots of fresh fruit and veggies
  • Fresh salad and our favorite dressings
  • Stuff for our Christmas morning breakfast casserole
  • Christmas dinner of steaks, garlic bread, steamed veggies and salad
  • Stuff for Lasagna dinner
  • Stuff for Pizza dinner
  • Breads and sandwich fixings

For the days that we went to Disneyland and Sea World:

  • Breakfast: While we were shopping at Walmart and Albertsons, we picked up items for what we call “breakfast in a bag” that we usually make on Sunday mornings.  As we leave for church at 8:30 am (which is a challenge for a family of 6), breakfast in a bag is the lifesaver those mornings. So we decided to do the same thing for those early morning theme park days.  Kids get dressed and we hand them a bag and stick them in the car – which means we are ready to go and have well fed kiddos! Our breakfasts in a bag this week included: clementines, bananas, yogurt, Nutri-grain bars and breakfast cookies.
  • Snacks: We purchased snack crackers and other snack foods for while we are in the parks to help us not spend money on the many snacks that toddlers and little kids need (ok – mom and dad too :) ) Most of these were crackers, clementines, rice krispy treats, and homemade organic fruit leather that we made and brought from home.
  • Lunches: Similar to the lunches on the days we stayed-in, sandwiches and more packed lunches. Since we had the condo with a full-size fridge and freezer, it was easy to make and pack lunches from the condo to take with us and refreeze our reusable ice packs we brought from home.
  • Dinners: For the dinners at the theme parks, we did a couple of things.  We first looked up restaurants in the Disney area or Disney property and discovered that House of Blues in Downtown Disney was on Restaurant.com! We waited for a clearance sale and purchased $25 gift certificates for $2! We did read the fine print and we could only use one every thirty days, but this took care of one meal for us and we didn’t even have to leave the Disney grounds.  Second, we were following the Disney Blog for about a month before we left and mid-month, they posted these 30% off coupons to use in the park at a handful of restaurants.  We printed a couple of these to eat at the park the other two Disney nights.  We chose to do this instead of trying to leave the grounds and eating outside of the park due to the high amount of people in the park! We wanted to maximize our time in the park since we would have longer wait lines.
  • Drinks: Probably the biggest money saver of all for inside of the parks was taking our own water! at $3 a bottle, this can add up VERY quickly! Honestly, our kids will down an entire bottle in one setting when they are working – they drink a ton of water, and we literally packed in a 24-pack of water into the park in the bottom of our stroller every day.  The 24-packs of water cost us $2.59 each day vs. the $3.00 a bottle each water break.  We calculate that this is over a $70 savings each day. So if you are to do anything to save money at theme parks, taking your own water (although heavy and irritating!) will save you LOADS of money! We also had some special character Tummy Ticklers apple juices that we got on clearance for .33 a bottle, normally $1.50.   This was a fun treat to pull-out for the kids as they were Disney themed and looked like mini versions of the souvenir cups you buy for $8-$10!

For the Road Trip:

  • By the time our trip is over, we will have spent 4 days on the road.  Even just those 4-days of buying food for the family can put a huge gash in your budget! So we packed snacks in our cooler for the driving munchies.  We grabbed these snacks from our stockpile at home, we did not make a special buying trip. This meant that they were SUPER cheap and some were probably FREE. We also made a few pans of homemade organic fruit leather that we snacked on throughout the vacation. We also had our coupon binder where we used the restaurant section to find the fast food coupons to use along the road.  If you remember our post from a couple of weeks ago, we even had FREE Wendy’s French Fry coupons! We would buy a sandwich and maybe fries, but fill-in the rest of the meal with our drinks we packed and fresh veggies and fruits.   For the breakfasts, we did stay at hotels that offered FREE breakfast (see our previous post on our hotel at $58 a night - this included the breakfast that we forgot to mention there!).

These are a few tricks we did this time. There are many, many ideas and ways to save on food while on vacation.  Even when eating out, just little tricks like ordering water and having the kids split an adult entree will save loads of money without coupons or pre-planning involved!

The picture above is us at our Christmas morning breakfast table in our vacation condo with breakfast casserole.  No showers and beauty here, just the real-life family enjoying a yummy Christmas breakfast!

Our 2010 Vacation: How We Saved On Accomodations and Our Vacation Spot

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy here.

by Cassie on December 29, 2010

So if you have been reading our site or watching on our Facebook page, you know that we are on vacation right now! We went on vacation for the Christmas holiday and are still enjoying our family time. We have had a few bumps in the road (literally) but all-in-all, it has been a great time so far!

We haven’t told you yet just where we are, so…. We decided to take a trip to Southern California!

As many of you know, we declared that we are “debt-free” earlier this year.  With that, came work, commitment, sacrifice, encouragement and accountability to shed ourselves of our financial stupidity!  So, after all that we had put into this to get out, we wanted and planned to take a vacation the entire family could enjoy in celebration.

When we sat down with our kids and said “what should our celebration vacation be?”  What words do you think were uttered out of the mouths of a 4, 5, and 6 year old??? Would the word DISNEYLAND make sense?

But we didn’t want to do just Disneyland but a vacation where Disneyland was involved.  Now let us start off by saying that this trip as had a few bumps in the road (literally) and we will explain more as we continue to share with you.

Here’s how we planned and saved in hopes that this information will help your family to take a vacation (whether Southern California or anywhere else).

First bit of advice from our well earned Doctorate Finance Degree from the School of Life: Don’t take a vacation that you cannot afford because it can get you into a lot of trouble!

Second, always plan on your trip costing more than you expect and plan for the unexpected financially.

With those two important notes out of the way, here’s what we did:

  • Sat down as a family after declaring debt-freedom to decide where we would like to celebrate this accomplishment.  And heard those words that are a nightmare to some parents ears: Disneyland.
  • We also wanted to add a couple of the adult favorites like Sea World and the beach.
  • We researched the initial cost of the trip and to find our price points to beat over the next several months.
  • We then determined how much we needed to save each paycheck.  We just saved a portion of the paycheck as we have other financial goals that we want to meet as well.
  • Then we start planning and trying to find deals over the following months and cut costs to save even more.

So, we wanted to share with you the first area of savings for our personal vacation this year and ideas to help you save on accommodations in the future!

For this trip from Utah to Southern California, we needed two types of accommodations for this trip: Hotel Suite and 2-Bedroom Condo.

We needed the hotel suite (as there is 6 of us) for one-night stay for half the trip down and up. With 4 little kids, it is too long and stressful for us to make it in one day – it is intended to be a vacation!

We ended up with a mini-suite at a chain hotel for $58.

Here’s how:

  • Looked up the rates for a family of 6 on Travelocity for our location.  This became our price point.  We were quoted $116 for the hotel we preferred and lower than many in the area.
  • We then went to this Hotel Chain’s website directly and did that same search on their website.  We were quoted $89 with our AAA discount.
  • We then called the front desk of the actual location and talked to the person that makes reservations.  After asking for the lowest possible rates available and also the AAA discount.  The gentleman on the other end said he could get us this mini-suite for $58 for that night! SWEET!

See our post on Hotel Accommodation discounts for more ideas on hotel savings.

We also wanted to get a condo resort type for the actual stay in Southern Cal.  This was a bit more work and we booked a “back-up” in case we couldn’t get the deal we were hoping.  We ended up with something much better than expected!

After much diligence, we ended up with a condo with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a pull-out couch bed, full and complete kitchen and fully furnished and stocked with the essentials! Just the room we wanted! This will give us space, real sleep so we can be in separate bedrooms, saving money on food/eating out and many more benefits.

We knew before that it was a block from the beach, but what we didn’t know was what that meant! When we got here, it was beautiful! We have a porch overlooking the ocean (see our picture at the top) and we have thoroughly enjoyed the site, smell and sound of the big blue ocean (it really is a rare site for us Idaho/Utahans!).  We spent the first two days here hanging on the beach! We can’t even express how much of a blessing it was to land this deal! There was no way we would have paid for something like this and so we are very thankful to have a relaxing place to stay!

The price we paid for this amazing accommodations: $110 a night! This is about 1/3 the cost they normally charge! To find tips on landing a deal on a condo resort type accommodation, see our previous post!

And to top off our vacation, it was 75 degrees when we got here! We had one day of rain so far, but incredibly beautiful and warm compared to the previous week when we were all watching Southern California get hit hard with that rain!

We will next share how we are saving money on food and eating out while down here.

Daily Dose of Thrifty: Use Bing Travel to Score Great Airline Travel Deals

Today’s Daily Dose of Thrifty is dealing with travel by air.  We are coming up on the season for holiday travel plans and now is the time to start hunting for the best deals.

Quite a while ago, we started using a website called Farecast.com which is now known as Bing.comFarecast.com allowed you to put in your travel dates for air travel and the site would provide a travel forecast (or farecast) attempting to give you an idea of when to buy your airline tickets. It is the same idea behind a weather forecast, they might not always be right, but it gives you a good indication of what the upcoming weather is probably going to be.

Now that its switched over to Bing.com, we can still say that we love this site and the airfare farecast features.  Several months in advance, you can plug-in your intended travel dates and times and then track when the airline prices rise and fall – with Bing.com predicting the best time to buy.  When they give you a farecast, the site also indicates how confident they are in their prediction based on a percentage. For example: “Wait to buy the tickets with a 76% confidence that the price will go lower,” etc.

In addition, they use a red arrow saying “wait to purchase as the price is probably going to decrease” and then will show an orange, yellow, light green all the way to dark green arrow and the dark green arrow indicates “don’t wait and buy now, we predict this price to be the lowest!”

You can also sign-up for email alerts from the Bing website so when the price hits a good farecast you will be immediately notified.  In addition, set multiple travel destinations/dates to monitor.  Finally, you can also compare leaving at a different date or different departure/arrival locations, which may help reduce your travel costs significantly.

There is also a newer feature called “rate indicator” which will give you an idea of how good of a deal a hotel rate is – this is a part of the site we haven’t explored much, but if it works along the same principle as the air travel, then this would probably be a very useful tool as well!

Share with us any other tricks either with Bing.com or other methods you use to get cheap airfare.  And start scoping out the lowest airfare now so you can save a bundle this holiday season!
