This week’s Walgreens shopping trips were goal oriented for our family: To grab the cheap diaper deals this week to donate to our local pregnancy center and pick up some bags of Hershey’s Kisses for us.
We actually went to three Walgreens for these results for two reasons: to not clear the shelf at one location and to receive multiple register rewards as we had another goal in mind with the register rewards this week (see the toys below).
So first, here’s what we bought from three Walgreens:
3 Packs of Walgreens wipes on sale for $1.99 each = $5.97. Then used three $1.00/1 peelie coupons (when the cashier pulled these off at the checkstand, they actually had expired on 11/30, but because it was a store coupon and attached to their brand product, they still took the money off) = final is $2.97 for three packs or .97 each
8 bags of Kisses (not shown in the picture above as we admit that 1.5 bags of the candy cane kisses have already been eaten! I have since hidden them from everyone – including us so that we can make it until Christmas ) for a final price of .75 each bag after all discounts considered (see our previous post HERE for the details)
3 Arm and Hammer SpinBrushes for Christmas (not shown as kids will see it ) with a final price of $1.99 each (see our previous post for the details)
After all of the above, we had $13 of Register Rewards to spend at Walgreens from the above transactions on anything in the store (the $5 from the Kisses is for the purchase of more Hershey’s products, not everything).
Walgreens is running a Toys for Tots promotion too, so we decided to use them to purchase the buy 2 get one FREE toys that are normally priced at $6.99 = final is $13.98 for three toys to donate paid for with the $13 in register rewards.
We will also be donating the 10 packs of diapers and the 3 packs of wipes to our local pregnancy center. So in the end, other than our cheap kisses and cheap toothbrushes, our Walgreens goal this week was to give to others in need.
We have been wanting and planning to go sometime soon and can’t wait until we get to go (and we will go again when the Ark Encounter opens – so excited for this too).
Have you gone to the Creation Museum yet? How is it?

We were so excited at the beginning of this week with the announcement from The Morning Center to establish three Mobile Care Units in three cities to provide free, high quality prenatal and maternity care for mothers in urban areas to learn how to care for themselves and their growing babies. We have been watching and waiting with anticipation for this announcement and wanted to share it with you! But first, what is a Mobile Care Unit and who is The Morning Center?
The Morning Center is a ministry of Samaritan Ministries with the goal of providing free, high quality Christ-centered maternity care to women in inner-city areas that just don’t have access to it. Their vision is to be the next step in the pro-life movement. With all the amazing work done to preserve and save the life of the unborn child, where do we send those women for the quality help and assistance when they can’t afford it and just don’t have access to it? The Morning Center aims to do just that with a long-term vision of establishing hospitals for women and their babies to receive free care and the more immediate vision of establishing Mobile Care Units (see below) in three cities to help them start providing that care sooner, enabling them to gather critical information from each city on how they can best minister in those areas, and build their staff incrementally as their ministry grows.
Here’s the exciting announcement that just came out November 1, 2011:
Why do we share this with you? Because we are excited to let you know that a portion of the proceeds from our site will help support the work of The Morning Center. But even more so, we want to let you know about this amazing ministry so you can share this with your friends, know how to pray for their work, and even ultimately support this ministry by donating your time or resources to see the expansion of this important work!
Not only are we excited about their mission and vision, but we are excited how they are approaching this as well. They mentioned a few weeks ago that unlike most hospital nonprofit charities that spend up to 33 cents for every dollar raised that they are seeking to keep the same costs under 10% – which shows us their goal to be good stewards with the money given to this charity (a very thrifty approach ). And not only that, but we feel their announcement to start with three Mobile Care Units in three different cities blew us out of the water! We see this as a huge benefit for the work as this incremental approach will allow them to minister to more women and children with an initial lower investment while they work to establish the long-term, permanent hospitals in different cities across the nation in the future!
UPDATE - We are extremely excited with The Morning Center’s latest announcement – they are planning their pilot hospital in Memphis, TN. We highly recommend the following video to you!
Thank you for letting us share this with you and we pray you will be excited about this as well. We encourage you to check out The Morning Center site and see what they are all about. Here are some different ideas on how you can get involved with this ministry:
They offer you an opportunity to sign up to get more information as they offer it and a place to let them know you are praying for the work as well.
Follow The Morning Center on Facebook to get real-time updates and get involved with their community – let them know The Thrifty Couple sent you!
Their goal is to offer this quality care exclusively through private funding. As such, they offer you a place to securely help financially support their ministry as well, a tax deductible donation as they are a tax exempt charity under the Internal Revenue Code (501(c)(3)).
We hope you see this amazing opportunity to support the next step in the pro-life movement!

When we think about Thanksgiving, a host of thoughts come to our mind. We are thankful for our family, friends, and our freedoms we enjoy. We are thankful to the Lord God who has blessed our nation and family with all that we have. We love gathering with family during this time to rejoice together and enjoy the time of fellowship as we share a meal and rejoice in all the ways we have been blessed.
But we also know that during this economy we all have been impacted in several ways. This is why we have joined together with several of our dear blogging friends to help alleviate some of the costs up this upcoming Thanksgiving meal. We have teamed up to award (1) reader $136 in cash for their Thanksgiving meal.
While we would have loved to have raised more money to give away, we are so thankful for the award we have and pray it will be a blessing.
Here’s how to enter for a chance to win:

As we continue through the month of October we wanted to share with you a quick update on our status for the Stretch a Buck to Give More Giveaway challenge. First, we want to emphasize our rationale for sharing this – we want to encourage you to think of new, creative and even thrifty ways that you can give – we want to stress When You Save More You Can Give More!
Yesterday our family had a wonderful visit to our local pregnancy care center. We called ahead to find out if there was any way we could help – and we were excited to find out they needed help preparing for an upcoming fundraiser! They were making gift bags for the attendees and we knew that our family had enough arms and strength to do it. It was great – we organized ourselves to form our own production line – even our 2 year old was able to help by adding her assigned piece of candy to each bag. Our children were so excited and we all had a blast!
Not only was our family able to help with free labor (pretty cheap and thrifty way to give) but we were thankful to share with them some of the diapers we had been stocking up on plus some formula we purchased using our formula checks we had been receiving since the birth of baby Josiah just a few months ago.
TIP: If you plan on nursing and have a baby, don’t throw away those formula checks as you can use them for the small containers of formula and get them for FREE or cheap – then donate those cans to your local pregnancy center or food bank!
How is your progress on Stretching a Buck to Give More? Remember that we also are sponsoring a $25 Amazon gift card giveaway for anyone that wants to join us! Check out some other great ideas to give as well.
Welcome to our Thrifty World! We are glad that you are here! We offer a lot of information to help you improve your finances and your life – grab your favorite drink, pull up a chair, explore and stay connected with us!
