Our Walgreens Shopping Trip Results: Diapers, Wipes and Toys To Donate

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy here.

by thriftycas on December 8, 2011

This week’s Walgreens shopping trips were goal oriented for our family: To grab the cheap diaper deals this week to donate to our local pregnancy center and pick up some bags of Hershey’s Kisses for us. ;)

We actually went to three Walgreens for these results for two reasons: to not clear the shelf at one location and to receive multiple register rewards as we had another goal in mind with the register rewards this week (see the toys below).

So first, here’s what we bought from three Walgreens:

  • 10 jumbo packs of diapers from size N-2 for our local pregnancy center at a final price of $4 per pack (see our Cheap Diaper Deals post for the details on how to do this deal) = final is $40 for 10 Jumbo Packs or $4 each
  • 3 Packs of Walgreens wipes on sale for $1.99 each = $5.97.  Then used three $1.00/1 peelie coupons (when the cashier pulled these off at the checkstand, they actually had expired on 11/30, but because it was a store coupon and attached to their brand product, they still took the money off) = final is $2.97 for three packs or .97 each
  • 8 bags of Kisses (not shown in the picture above as we admit that 1.5 bags of the candy cane kisses have already been eaten! I have since hidden them from everyone – including us so that we can make it until Christmas ;) ) for a final price of .75 each bag after all discounts considered (see our previous post HERE for the details)
  • 3 Arm and Hammer SpinBrushes for Christmas (not shown as kids will see it ;) ) with a final price of $1.99 each (see our previous post for the details)

After all of the above, we had $13 of Register Rewards to spend at Walgreens from the above transactions on anything in the store (the $5 from the Kisses is for the purchase of more Hershey’s products, not everything).

Walgreens is running a Toys for Tots promotion too, so we decided to use them to purchase the buy 2 get one FREE toys that are normally priced at $6.99 = final is $13.98 for three toys to donate paid for with the $13 in register rewards.

We will also be donating the 10 packs of diapers and the 3 packs of wipes to our local pregnancy center.  So in the end, other than our cheap kisses and cheap toothbrushes, our Walgreens goal this week was to give to others in need.

What is The Morning Center and Have You Heard Their Amazing Announcements?

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy here.

by thriftyal on November 9, 2011

We were so excited at the beginning of this week with the announcement from The Morning Center to establish three Mobile Care Units in three cities to provide free, high quality prenatal and maternity care for mothers in urban areas to learn how to care for themselves and their growing babies.  We have been watching and waiting with anticipation for this announcement and wanted to share it with you!  But first, what is a Mobile Care Unit and who is The Morning Center?

The Morning Center is a ministry of Samaritan Ministries with the goal of providing free, high quality Christ-centered maternity care to women in inner-city areas that just don’t have access to it.  Their vision is to be the next step in the pro-life movement.  With all the amazing work done to preserve and save the life of the unborn child, where do we send those women for the quality help and assistance when they can’t afford it and just don’t have access to it?  The Morning Center aims to do just that with a long-term vision of establishing hospitals for women and their babies to receive free care and the more immediate vision of establishing Mobile Care Units (see below) in three cities to help them start providing that care sooner, enabling them to gather critical information from each city on how they can best minister in those areas, and build their staff incrementally as their ministry grows.

Here’s the exciting announcement that just came out November 1, 2011:

Why do we share this with you?  Because we are excited to let you know that a portion of the proceeds from our site will help support the work of The Morning Center.  But even more so, we want to let you know about this amazing ministry so you can share this with your friends, know how to pray for their work, and even ultimately support this ministry by donating your time or resources to see the expansion of this important work!

Not only are we excited about their mission and vision, but we are excited how they are approaching this as well.  They mentioned a few weeks ago that unlike most hospital nonprofit charities that spend up to 33 cents for every dollar raised that they are seeking to keep the same costs under 10% – which shows us their goal to be good stewards with the money given to this charity (a very thrifty approach :) ).  And not only that, but we feel their announcement to start with three Mobile Care Units in three different cities blew us out of the water!  We see this as a huge benefit for the work as this incremental approach will allow them to minister to more women and children with an initial lower investment while they work to establish the long-term, permanent hospitals in different cities across the nation in the future!

UPDATE - We are extremely excited with The Morning Center’s latest announcement – they are planning their pilot hospital in Memphis, TN. We highly recommend the following video to you!

Thank you for letting us share this with you and we pray you will be excited about this as well.  We encourage you to check out The Morning Center site and see what they are all about.  Here are some different ideas on how you can get involved with this ministry:

We hope you see this amazing opportunity to support the next step in the pro-life movement!

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy here.

by thriftyal on November 1, 2011

When we think about Thanksgiving, a host of thoughts come to our mind.  We are thankful for our family, friends, and our freedoms we enjoy.  We are thankful to the Lord God who has blessed our nation and family with all that we have.  We love gathering with family during this time to rejoice together and enjoy the time of fellowship as we share a meal and rejoice in all the ways we have been blessed.

But we also know that during this economy we all have been impacted in several ways.  This is why we have joined together with several of our dear blogging friends to help alleviate some of the costs up this upcoming Thanksgiving meal. We have teamed up to award (1) reader $136 in cash for their Thanksgiving meal.

While we would have loved to have raised more money to give away, we are so thankful for the award we have and pray it will be a blessing.

Give More When You Save More: Here’s One Way We Gave for FREE Plus $25 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy here.

by thriftyal on October 19, 2011

As we continue through the month of October we wanted to share with you a quick update on our status for the Stretch a Buck to Give More Giveaway challenge.  First, we want to emphasize our rationale for sharing this – we want to encourage you to think of new, creative and even thrifty ways that you can give – we want to stress When You Save More You Can Give More!

Yesterday our family had a wonderful visit to our local pregnancy care center.  We called ahead to find out if there was any way we could help – and we were excited to find out they needed help preparing for an upcoming fundraiser!  They were making gift bags for the attendees and we knew that our family had enough arms and strength to do it.  It was great – we organized ourselves to form our own production line – even our 2 year old was able to help by adding her assigned piece of candy to each bag.  :)   Our children were so excited and we all had a blast!

Not only was our family able to help with free labor (pretty cheap and thrifty way to give) but we were thankful to share with them some of the diapers we had been stocking up on plus some formula we purchased using our formula checks we had been receiving since the birth of baby Josiah just a few months ago.

TIP: If you plan on nursing and have a baby, don’t throw away those formula checks as you can use them for the small containers of formula and get them for FREE or cheap – then donate those cans to your local pregnancy center or food bank!

How is your progress on Stretching a Buck to Give MoreRemember that we also are sponsoring a $25 Amazon gift card giveaway for anyone that wants to join us!  Check out some other great ideas to give as well.

For more ideas on how to participate in our giving challenge please check our our original post in which we share giving ideas with instructions on how to enter the $25 Amazon gift card giveaway!

Challenging You to Stretch a Buck to Give More Plus Giveaway

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy here.

by thriftyal on September 22, 2011

UPDATE: Congratulations to Desiree for winning this giveaway. Be watching for upcoming challenges!

What if you could take a dollar, stretch it to five and give to a local food bank?  What if without money but your time you could offer a women’s shelter the supplies they need and request on a regular basis?  What would you think if you could purchase some diapers cheap and give them to your local pregnancy crisis center?  How much impact would we all have if we all pledged to do a little but in the end could do a lot?

This is the heart of what we refer to as thrifty giving – or the ability to take something small, something that we would consider insignificant and through wise stewardship and working together we could in some larger way affect the lives of others in an impactful and meaningful way.

We have always felt that one way as The Thrifty Couple we could cause the most impact was by providing you the tools and resources to give the most you can by maximizing your buying potential.  If you remember last holiday season, we encouraged many of you to do this exact thing with your local food bank and Angel Tree.  We have mentioned other opportunities where you could help provide free photo books for the troops or even help donate diapers one click at a time.  We want to take the next step and give you more – the tools and resources to continue this year round!

When we are wise stewards of what we have been given, all the sudden we can give more.  When we all come together, respond to the challenge and pledge to give united (even through your charity of choice) we can make drastic changes to those who need our help.

Overview of the Challenge

In the weeks heading up to Thanksgiving, we will be running a challenge – our goal is to get as many that would love to participate to pledge what small way you can help in your community with the goal to grow that small investment into more.  What do I mean?  Here are some examples to help you out:

  • Stretch a buck for the food bank – Last holiday season we pledged to you that we would stretch $20 each week as far as we could to help our local food bank.  During this challenge we pledge to you to provide you the tools and resources to maximize those deals and each week buy very cheap or even FREE items that you can turn around and give to your local food bank.  Whether you pledge $20 or even $1, our goal is to help us all maximize what we can give!
  • Samples for a local woman’s shelter – We have a local shelter that houses battered and abused women trying to rebuild their lives.  Our local shelter loves any donations for these women including toiletries, makeup, and a number of other items we consider small but they value more than you could imagine.  Possibly you would like to donate your time by spending a few extra minutes on the computer each week to sign up for samples or free products that you can turn around and give to your local shelter – for the simple price of FREE!
  • Provide pet food for a local animal shelter – Recently we have posted some amazing deals (including FREE) on dog and cat food.  What if you were able to commit to buying or picking up your free food to then donate to your local animal shelter?  Sounds like a thrifty way to maximize your giving – and you may not even own a dog or cat!
  • Purchase cheap diapers for your local pregnancy crisis/care center – Not only do these centers help women through pregnancies, many often help these new mothers to provide for their new addition.  Instead of buying retail price diapers, consider using our list on the best deals on diapers to maximize your giving.  Giving twice the diapers (or more?) than you could for the same retail price will make your gift go that much further!
  • Keep bags of food in your vehicle to give to the homeless – We try to keep a few bags of food in our van especially during this time of the year as many families and homeless are struggling to find something to eat.  When you can take your coupons and buy (or get for FREE) items you normally wouldn’t buy, you can meet needs that you never would have imagined before.
  • Donate your time at a local charity – If you are looking for even more ways to donate consider your time!  When you donate your time you are giving an amazing gift.  Call your local charity and find out if you can assist for a few hours and see how the gift of yourself can be a blessing to others.
  • Because you save so much you can give more – When you save more you don’t only free up your budget to live off less.  You also free up your budget to allow you to increase your support for a local charity, a ministry, or more!
  • And many more – The list abounds, whether you are preparing to donate money or items to your local charity, consider doing it the thrifty way and stretching your giving!

We pledge to you:

We will give you the tools necessary to maximize your giving

Keep following our site daily to find out how you can maximize your giving.  Each week we will post the best of the best – deals that are so hot that your giving will be maximized.  You will see free items that don’t require purchase.  All of this we promise and dedicate to you so you can truly take what you set aside and give the most from it.  In addition, we promise to post samples as well so you can sign up for them and collect them to give to your local women’s shelter.  You name it, we will try our best to give you whatever resource we can to help you!  Be watching for specially marked posts to help you identify the most relevant and hot deals to help you with this challenge.

We will help keep you accountable – through a fun Giveaway!
