I have a confession to make.  There really is only one chef in our house – and that’s Cassie.  When it comes to the kitchen or even the grill, I get stuck on my small arsenal of recipes.  So when it comes to grilling, its no different – do we want BBQ sauce on the chicken again?

But another confession is that I don’t usually like cookbooks either. I get intimidated over seeing a recipe that will take 10-15 ingredients (of course I never have all of them).  That’s why I was surprised to see this cookbook.  It has some recipes with those complicated recipes (that Cassie loves), but at the same time has a lot of recipes that I can make as well.  Take the Grilled Peaches above.  All it calls for is some Dijon mustard, horseradish and honey.  I can handle that – and it looks amazing!

And take a look at this recipe for the Grilled Artichokes.  All I need is a tomato (which we always have) plus all the other spices we have in our spice rack.  I’m hoping this cookbook will help me get out of my rut.  And I’m sure Cassie and the kids will be glad too!

As part of this, and as we continue to share our list of over 100 ways to earn extra income, we thought it important to give you some ideas on how to market your business.  But before we start sharing some initial strategies you can implement, its important to establish some thoughts about marketing overall and why you should do it.  We want to cover some ideas for you to consider before you market your business, to help you understand why you need to market your business and finally some tips on what to consider to ensure you are choosing your right strategy in how you market it.  We would love to have you share your thoughts as well so we can continue to build this great resource!

What is marketing?

We need to start somewhere of course and to me its always important to break a subject down to its most basic form.  According to Merriam-Webster, marketing is “the process or technique of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service.”  The reason I start here is because I want you to consider a few things before you start.  When you market, and especially promote your family business, you are promoting your product or service.  Why do I emphasize this?

• First, don’t forget that your product and/or service has value – The first place a family business can fail is when you don’t understand that you are offering value for what you are selling (I include products and services in this as you really do sell your services).  If you start a business and believe that what you are selling doesn’t have value, its going to come across in the way you promote it.  You don’t need to apologize for marketing.  You don’t need to apologize for promoting your products or services.  Remember the key to any transaction will be that you are providing the customer with something they want and are willing to pay for – and that ultimately the products/services they receive in return is worth the money they paid.  Just because you don’t have a brand name associated with it doesn’t mean it doesn’t have value.
• The value of your product and/or service is not free – Remember you are promoting a business – what your family is doing is building a business.  It can become frustrating at first if you don’t see much interest in your product/service.  It can take time to establish trust with those potential customers and time to build your product/service to a point that others see the value in it.  And although you might offer some free or deeply discounted products/services at first (incentives you offer for new customers to be discussed in our next article), remember that your product really does have value.  You are not taking all the time in the world to offer your product or service for some purely altruistic reason.  Yes, you may be able to help others with your product/service, but if you’re not going to receive anything in return for it, its not going to be worth your time as free products and services won’t help you reach your financial goals.
• Don’t be ashamed to promote your product/service – As you market, remember you are promoting the reasons why the potential customer need your products and services!  This may sound obvious, but when you promote your products, you need to tell the consumer why your product/service is of value.  Why would they want to buy from you instead of someone else?  It can be hard to talk about yourself, and that includes your family business, but if your product/service has value, then tell the world that it does.  Don’t apologize to them for offering value and asking the consumer to buy your product.
• Tell them why they should buy your product – Hopefully you’re business idea isn’t too saturated in the market, but we all know its rare to find a business idea that won’t already have competitors the day you open your doors.  And if your product/service is of value and you don’t initially have competitors, rest assured you will soon.  Let your customers know then why they should buy from you instead of someone else.  Think about this from every perspective – it doesn’t just have to be “we’re the cheapest”.  In fact, if you are selling a product/service with more value than your competitor, make sure to give the reasons why they should buy from you, with your higher priced product, than from their competitor.
• Promote your products and services honestly – After all this is said, make sure to be realistic in your marketing.  If you’re selling a service that will merely relieve the customer of the pain and agony of having to clean their own toilets (e.g., you offer to clean bathrooms), you probably don’t want to communicate that by hiring your services they will bring in peace on earth.  And if your product/service really isn’t worth the value you are selling it for, when either figure out how the improve the quality or figure out how to drop the price – or find another line of business altogether (last line of attack).

Why market?

I love to write about the obvious.  Shouldn’t everyone know this?  Maybe.  But when push comes to shove, when the rubber meets the road, when the tough get going…most don’t seem to understand these obvious points.  Maybe you would share these tips with your neighbor if they were starting their own business.  But when it comes to your own, especially when you are blinded by just how amazing you product/service really is, you might miss the reasons why you need to market.

• The business model “Build it and they will come” just doesn’t work – You’ve built your product.  You have developed your service you just know everyone will buy.  But whether you made the best product in the world, created the best website ever (after ours of course ), or even came up with the cure for cancer, you can’t just sit back and have your product/service just sell itself.  This idea might be nice for a touching baseball story, but you really need to let the world (or neighborhood, city, nation – whatever sphere you are trying to influence) that your product or service is ready to buy.  We have seen business flop (yes, including our own) because we couldn’t get those products and services in front of the right customer base.
• Others don’t see the value in your product like you do – Yes, your product is better than any other on the market.  We get that.  Or do we?  Your product is the one you want others to buy and you know inside and out why.  Its your baby.  You have invested and even poured yourself into it and you know that others will benefit from your product.  But when you don’t tell those potential customers the value of your product and benefits, when you don’t even get those proposed benefits in front of a potential customer, you won’t have a customer.  Don’t think that just because you know your product/service intimately means everyone else will have that knowledge.  You need to share that with them – and you need to market to do so.
• Potential customers don’t want to part with their hard-earned money – Even in the best of economies, consumers only have a limited amount of resources.  And to get consumers to part with those resources (time and money) and buy your product/service (then becoming your customer) may take some convincing.  You need to market to those customers, to let them know you exist, let them know why your product/service is of value, etc.  We hope you’re getting the idea.

Considerations when Marketing

We wanted to finish up our Marketing 101 with some additional items to consider.

• It really does take money to make money – This old adage is so true.  In fact its become increasingly clear as we continue to build all our businesses.  It really does take money – invested – to make money – profit.  You might be thinking I’m wrong – that all you need to do is invest your free time to make your business take off.  But that’s exactly my point – your time is money.  Not only do consumers have a limited, finite amount of time to work with, so do you!  When you take that “free time” and put it into building your business or marketing, you’re taking that time from somewhere else, whether its family, time you could have spent more effectively on another aspect or your business (see next point), or even away from your own free time.  Your time has a cost associated with it, and that cost must be somehow determined to understand the investment you are making in your business.
• Consider Return on Investment (ROI) – Whether you are investing your time or your money, its important to consider your ROI.  What this means is that when you invest your resources, do you expect to see a positive return on that investment (making more money than you invested) in the long run?  If your business idea is to sell a product and it cost you $100 in supplies and marketing and you only expect to sell $80 (with a loss of $20), then all of the sudden you see that you probably could have stuck that $100 under your mattress and ultimately come out ahead.  Now if that initial $100 investment started to make a monthly, residual income of $20 per month, you all the sudden see that after six months you’ll start making a profit.  This illustration is to help you understand that resources invested should have an expected return on that investment – hopefully in the black.  And as you realize that you can start making wiser decisions.  Would $100 invested in this marketing strategy have as high of a return as in another?  Your wisdom acquired throughout the process should help you to determine the best answer to those questions in the future.
• Sometimes it makes sense to pay for a service you can do yourself – I tend to see every one of these considerations in terms of ROI, especially this one.  I know that given enough time, and possibly even resources, you can figure out how to do everything you want to accomplish.  But when your task list continues to build, you start to wonder if there will be an end to it.  One lesson that has been hard for me to realize is that when you can, let the person who can do it best – while ultimately saving you time and money – do it for you.  Sure you can figure out how to design your web page, but if you know that paying a designer a reasonable amount of money will allow you to invest your time in something else with better return on your time (there’s the ROI), then maybe you should consider hiring it out.  How does this apply to marketing?  Instead of passing out flyers yourself, pay some kids to deliver them for you.  Think through each decision, consider your time and ask whether that time can be invested better somewhere else by paying them to help you – yes, even if you can do it yourself.
• Ask yourself whether you would buy from someone else using your chosen marketing strategy – One of the quickest ways to determine whether your selected marketing strategy will be successful is to ask yourself some quick questions:
• Would I buy from someone if they marketed this product/service the same way?
• If I’m bringing this person inside my home will that amount of information communicated in that marketing strategy translate into trust?
• Did that strategy communicate enough information that I would know enough about the value of the product/service and benefit to me?
• Does the selected strategy hit the right target audience?
• Consider cost of reaching the right customer – Some marketing strategies are going to cost less to implement than others.  A simple flyer placed on a car windshield or neighborhood may cost less than purchasing a full-page ad in your local newspaper, but you have to yet again consider your ROI.  Your business may not require as much trust as another (your product/service isn’t taking you into their home or isn’t requiring the customer to pay a lot of money) so some strategies might be more appropriate.  Or rather, you need some great testimonials, some way of communicating that you have the professional requirements and trust so another form of advertising (though more costly) could be of greater benefit.  We can’t go into all the details here, but as you know your business intimately, consider the best ways to market your business, communicate your message and reach the right consumer.
• Don’t trust solely in a single marketing strategy – Right after thinking that “You have built it and they will come”, the next usual error is trusting too much in a single marketing strategy.  We’re not going to say that it will always be the wrong decision, but usually when you can diversify your approach you can ensure that if one fails you’ll still have other marketing strategies to rely upon.
• Test and Evaluate. Try again. – When you decide on the ways you plan to market, make sure to test your marketing strategy and then evaluate whether it was successful.  Try to quantify the results so you can truly determine your cost and the actual ROI you found from the cost of your investment.   Have you ever wondered why companies will usually include the question, “How did you hear about us?” when you purchase their products?  Its so they can determine whether the cost they expended in marketing through that strategy was worth their cost.  You can and should do the same.  It might take some creativity to come up with that information, but it should be possible.

Did we just throw too much information at you?  There is so much more that we are learning ourselves, but we thought it would be important to share with you the what and why of marketing before we shared the how.  We will next be sharing some ideas you can use for your businesses – and we hope to continue to build the list as we find more ourselves and hear from you.

You may wonder why we are posting this. Why is a couple that promotes paying off debt and working towards your financial goals (without more debt) promoting a tool to track your credit score?  We just shared our 2×2 Plan where we paid off $100K of debt.  Does this even make sense?

It does when you consider using a tool for your purposes.  Credit Sesame is a free tool that you can use to get your credit score each month, view your debt balances broken down into simple categories, amongst other tools.  So what’s the big deal?  Its that they want you to sign up and show you other offers on how to refinance your loans (it seems to be purely informational) and then give you the opportunity to refinance through them.  But just because they offer that doesn’t mean you have to do it.

When we say to use the tool for your purposes, what we mean is use this tool for the reasons you want to use it.

We signed up with one purpose in mind – make sure we don’t see any loans show up on our account or changes to our credit scores (one for each of us) each month.  If we see a mysterious loan added to our account next month, we know we need to take action immediately.  If we see our monthly update to our credit score drop all the sudden – we need to find out why.  What we are doing is trying to use a tool to protect our family and at the same time not have to pay $14-20 per month.

We use Credit Sesame because its one of the tools we depend upon to protect our family from identify theft.  But you always have to be careful of free tools – how can you trust them?  Here’s a couple of things you can find right on their site:

• They don’t share any of your information at all unless you request them to.  Even their employees don’t have access to your data.  Its secure and encrypted.  That’s important to us.
• They are certified by the big security companies.  You can even tell from the image below (see the 11-MAY from today’s scan?) that McAfee runs a daily scan on their site to ensure it meets their security standards, which McAfee states “help protect you from identify theft, viruses, spyware, and other online threats.”

• They have been featured in major media which helps calm us and let us know they are legit!  Just because a company offers something for free doesn’t mean we should use it.  But when they are certified, we see them all over the internet and are featured by large news sources we can take comfort they are a safe option for us.

Finally, we encourage you to sign up twice – once for you and once for your spouse.  You both have different social security numbers, you both are suspect to identity theft and we know first hand how things can “pop-up on one credit report” but not on the other.  You will need to sign up with different email addresses (standard security practice) due to privacy laws.

One extra fun thing they do is send you emails to let you know how you are doing.  Now please know we only share this with you because we want you to know where we have come from.  Our credit was so bad that we got to a point that we couldn’t get any more loans – we told you that right before we starting working through paying off our debt that we had to start getting Payday loans.  It was the only option we had with the credit scores we both had.  So I bet you can imagine how excited I was to receive this email just two years after paying off our final consumer debt (it can take years to repair your credit), giving me just one more confirmation that all that work paid off.

We made the first big change and announcement last week and we enjoyed hearing your encouragement on the change.  Nearly everyone was super excited about the new homepage and all of the timeless information being easier to access and find without having to wade through dozens of posts, while at the same time still posting all of those wonderful deals, savings, coupons and FREEBIES – just one click away on our blog (HINT: the blog is easy to bookmark for direct linking)!

We had been posting around 10 deals, savings ideas, coupons, and freebies every day for many months now – but we know many of you are just looking for many more posts to help you find those deals, coupons, savings tips and freebies/samples that will fit your family.  We haven’t been able to bring you more than the 10 posts as we’ve been trying to run our household, manage our many family businesses, and homeschool our children.  But we had an idea!

We know many other “Thrifty Couples” that each come from different stages of life, family dynamics, and budgets.  Why not have them share some of those daily posts with you to help give you some variety and perspectives each and every day?  So we asked and they excitedly said YES!  You might have even noticed that the number of daily posts are starting to increase!  And its only going to get better!

Honestly, we are super excited about this! Why?  There are many reasons, but here are the top three:

You get even more household finance and frugal living information – Now that we have some help with the daily savings posts – we are extremely excited to start spending more time writing the timeless articles, sharing our recipes, sharing thrifty and frugal living tips, budgeting, finance, and tips on making extra income or starting family businesses.  Pretty much everything that you see on the new homepage is going to grow and grow.  We will keep sharing our personal story and our unique and personal financial plan to help your family reach upcoming financial goals!

Cassie and I will also be able to start adding videos on couponing specifically and our unique approach to it (as referenced in the coupon corner on our homepage) plus you will soon find some really handy downloads for “Family Financial Focus” and “Healthy Harmonious Home” coming soon as well! We have been wanting to do all of these things for a very long time and so we are so ecstatic to bring you even more every week!

	Jake and Kiz live in a house with 5 bedrooms, 4 children, 3 goldfish, 2 felines, 1 dog, and a dove in a dying spruce tree. Kiz is a Spanish teacher at a Christian school and enjoys donating her time at the local Pregnancy Care Center. They love their kids and know first hand the financial reality of raising a family in today’s society with four kids – the last two being twins. They used Dave Ramsey’s system to pay off their consumer debt many years ago and do their best to stretch their tight budget as far as it can go to enjoy life as a family of six.
	Mark and Desiree are parents of 6; Mark teaches college philosophy and Desiree is a homemaker and homeschooling mom. We’ve survived (and even sometimes thrived!) for many years on a very tight budget while raising a large family and while Mark finished his Ph.D. at the same time; we know up close the trials of the current economy, and are excited to share with you some deals and strategies that can help make ends meet, pay off debt, and meet your goals.
	John and Darrelyn were just recently married. Darrelyn has been couponing for a couple of years, starting when a friend introduced her to the idea of saving money through the use of couponing. At first she started just as a hobby, and then it turned into a major way to save some money. Darrelyn is a Christian school teacher, and John has just recently earned his teaching degree and is currently looking for a teaching position. More than ever, John and Darrelyn need to save money because of their single income, and couponing has been a great way to save and make the ends meet. Darrelyn loves to find great deals online and at her local stores to save money on groceries, gifts, and some of the fun things in life.
	Mark and Lynda are a couple of baby boomers who love the Lord, life, fun, and cannot resist a deal. We really like saving money! Lynda has returned to college after raising children for 30 years to learn about computers and Mark is a CPA. We are a thrifty couple because we are trying to position ourselves to be ready financially for retirement and to be able to help others who are less fortunate, and to constantly discover ways people can save money and live life in service. Lynda and I would ultimately like to be in a good position financially and spiritually to be able to serve the Lord on some missions.
	Kael and Calli are a deal-seeking newlywed couple loving married life together. As busy and fiscally conscious college students, we are constantly on the lookout for useful and easily accessible deals. We want to thrive in our community and share our experiences with others who may have similar desires. We work throughout the summer and save our income to pay our living expenses throughout the school year which requires a lot of creative frugality. Some of our hobbies include: outdoor activities, college life, electronics, home crafts, cooking, and planning fun date nights.

Just last week we shared with you our secret, 2-by-2 Formula we used to pay off over $100K of consumer debt in just seven years.  If you’re new to the 2-by-2 Formula or want a refresher, we encourage you to check out our post where we finally revealed our personal, 2-by-2 Formula that we developed and used to pay off our $100K debt in seven years.

To give you a quick refresher on what we are talking about, the 2-by-2 Formula states the following in regards to your income:

• Establish your baseline income
• Increase your income the first month by 2% over your baseline
  
• Each subsequent months increase your income by 2% over the prior month’s actual income (remember that even if you missed your planned goal you just pick up from where you actually finished the prior month and make your goal 2% on top of that).

Note: We are only focusing on the income side of the 2-by-2 Formula in this article as it relates to the question at hand.  Don’t forget to check out the formula in whole where we also discuss decreasing spending as well.

With that, we receive a question a few times in comments and via email:

Question: How you can make the 2-by-2 Formula work for a family living on a variable income?  Isn’t that impossible on this plan?
Answer: Its honestly simple.  See why below!

To make it work with variable income, the first step is to calculate your average monthly income based off your variable income.

Average Income = Total Income / Number of months

Please note, don’t get stuck on this step as this is only used to establish your baseline and 2% of your amount honestly isn’t going to change that much.  After you establish your baseline income you’ll never use this amount again – throw it away for all we care!  You could use the last three months or even the last year – either way it will be ok as you’re only trying to establish a starting point.  We promise.

Your goal for the first month is then to increase your income by 2% of that baseline income.  For example, if your baseline income is $3,000 (after calculating your average income), then the 2% additional income you need to bring in that first month is $60.  It is this amount (the additional income) that you will want to make your goal for the first month.

Then at the end of each month identify that additional income directly resulting from the specific actions your family took to increase your income, whether through ideas of your own or maybe even one of our ideas from Over 100 Ways to Earn Extra income.  Whatever you track as that month’s actual, additional income is then increased the next month by 2%.  Seems easy, right?

Subsequent Month Additional Income Goal = Prior Month Actual * 1.02 (shortcut for 2% more)

So if your goal was $60 for the first month and you brought in only $55 of actual, additional income that first month, your next month’s goal would be as following:

Example: $55 actual income (goal was $60)
Next months goal: $55 * 1.02 = $56.10

All the sudden what seemed difficult at first becomes simple!  Your family should be able to identify the additional income resulting from your additional work. And all you need to do in applying our 2-by-2 Formula is increasing that income each month by 2% over the actual income from that prior month.

The goal here is to remember we are talking about making small changes each month that incrementally will add up to a large whole!  And when you realize that it will be much easier to see the forest instead of the trees.

If all this sounds too overwhelming:  If you honestly don’t want to calculate anything at all just use last months income, whatever it is and take 2% of that.  If that was your highest month, use your lowest month.  The key we want to emphasize is to just start somewhere!  Our goal is to help you find a starting place and work at improving each month in small, yet achievable ways.

When we started our site a number of years ago we started by sharing specific, daily tips to help you save in your budget.  At the time, we were in the final stages of paying off our $100K of consumer debt and knew we wanted to eventually provide you the tools and resources we used ourselves to help you with your financial goals.  As time continued, we started to slowly share our Deep in Debt to Debt Free story with the intent of eventually sharing the process we used to pay off our debt.  Over the last year, however, many of you have requested we share the process we used.  We have been building up to it and now it is here – or at least the overall approach that we have used, that we are using, and that we plan to use in meeting our every financial goal.

Our passion is to provide you these resources to help your family with something we didn’t have years ago – a plan that we had to come up with as we tried to dig ourselves out of that seemingly infinite hole of debt.  Our passion is to share what worked for us.  Not one that we picked up from a book but rather one that we developed as a family to work within our family.

This is why we are sharing it with you – because we hope and pray that if it worked for us that it might help others as well!  Our desire is to put this in your hands and then continue giving you the resources you need (e.g., how to cut your grocery/household/everything budget and ideas for earning extra income) to accomplish this.  When we were in the heart of our debt we didn’t have anything like this.  And we didn’t even know it could be done.  That’s really why we started our site when it comes down to it, to help others know that it can be done, that there really is a light at the end of the tunnel when you can’t see it, and try to share those tips with you on how to do it.

But why another plan and why so different?

If you’re wondering the reasons for a different plan (there are so many plans out there), we encourage you to check out our previous articles we wrote in preparation for this one:

At the end of the day, and if we had to put it into one sentence, its that open communication, honesty, accountability, and small, incremental changes towards a holistic lifestyle change will actually give you greater results than the all-or-nothing approach.

Here’s the plan – we like to refer to it as our “2 by 2 plan” as the heart of it is that small 2% each month.  This may sound simple, but this is truly what worked for our family.

1. Track your expenses and earnings over a period of 1-3 months
2. Create your baseline budget based off of reality (the results you found in #1)
3. Decrease spending each month by 2% (“found money” goes into savings/debt)
4. Increase income each month by 2% (“found money” goes into savings/debt)
5. Each subsequent month will be decrease/increase by 2% over the actuals (or reality) of the prior month

Is that too simplistic?  Well, we hope its pretty simple.  Because honestly, if we gave you an overly complicated flow chart (e.g., this government health care flow chart probably requires a more detailed approach than your household budget) you might be tempted to say, “Thank for the information anyway, but no thanks its not for me,” and move on to another plan.

We really did try to keep it simple because as we developed this in the heart of our debt.  It wasn’t something we were trying to develop to later on share on a website.  This wasn’t something we were planning to one day release to the world and hope that it would help others.  No, there were times we would have never imagined we could use the words “Debt Free” and us in the same sentence.  We would have laughed at you had you asked us if we would refer to ourselves one day as The Thrifty Couple.  This plan is what we developed because our family needed something that would work.  Our family needed something we could simply use.

We’ll try to keep it simple here and then in future weeks expand on more of our rationale and even ways that we came up with this plan to help you understand the plan in full.  But hopefully after reading this post, you will have a good high-level view to help you understand how to get started in meeting your own financial goals!

#1. Track your expenses and earnings over a period of 1-3 months
At first, this step might seem overwhelming, but our encouragement to you is to try and get through this part as any effort you expend here will pay off in the long haul.  Depending on your family, you might already have this data from the last few months.  If not, there’s no reason to worry as you can start tracking your expenses and income now.

A few months ago we were sharing this at a conference and we were asked how to break those expenses down.  First, we want to assure you that this can be done and might depend on how your family has been tracking your expenses.  It might be as easy as signing up for a free online tool to track your expenses for a couple of months and let that service break down your spending into categories.  No matter how you track it, the most basic numbers you need is your total incoming (e.g., earnings, income, tips) and outgoing (e.g., spending, bills, transfer to savings).  Its really these two major numbers that you will use for this plan.

But before we write off the importance of knowing any details where your money is going, we would like to emphasize that the more you know will help you understand how best to approach this plan.  You already know your own personality.  Will it be pulling teeth to get you to estimate the amount you spend each month on groceries?  Then that’s a great place to start.  Will you be sitting down and breaking your grocery category into produce, dairy and other subcategories?  That’s awesome.  Either way, we encourage you to break up your spending into categories with the end result of knowing where to best cut later.

We’ll try to share more over the next few weeks, but places you can easily get some of your spending categorized is by checking your bank (some will divide your transactions into categories for you), your credit card company (e.g., American Express and others will give you a nice pie chart showing your categorized spending) and finally a free service like Mint.com that will do the same for all your accounts.  What this will do is at least give you a great starting place for your “baseline spending.”

The earnings portion of this should be much easier for you to track depending on your family situation.  Do you receive a paycheck or two per month?  Do you have tips to include?  Do you have other areas that you receive additional income?  Add it all together and this becomes your “baseline income.”

#2. Create your baseline budget based off of reality (the results you found in #1)
Once you have determined the actual spending and earnings based off the last few months, we encourage you to use that as your “baseline budget”.  This is reality for your family and will be the basis for where you cut next month (your spending) and where you try to add next month (your income).  You can use this Budget Spreadsheet download as a template to help give you a place to start.  We know its much easier to use electronically so will try to develop an even easier version to use in the weeks ahead.

#3. Decrease spending each month by 2% (“found money” goes into savings/debt)
Here’s where our plan becomes drastically different than what you might have seen before.  The goal for next month is not to go through and cut your spending by 75%.  Simply, the goal for next month is to make a small change to get one step closer towards your financial goals.  We’ll remind you again that the situation you are in today probably didn’t happen overnight, so why try to change everything in one month?  Trust us, though it seems small, it will add up to larger differences quickly.  And the motivation and encouragement you gain from seeing your family actually accomplish a smaller goal will help you overcome that inertia resulting from never getting started.  Once that snowball starts moving down the hill, it will become harder to stop – so don’t!

But one thing we want to encourage you in is to try making that 2% decrease in spending as something you can see your family making as a lifetime change.  In other words, instead of trying to cut out those expenses that you know you’ll add back into your budget immediately after meeting your financial goal, consider whether you can find healthier, more wholesome alternatives to help you live better for less.  For example, maybe you want to cut back on your grocery budget and want take a few more minutes in your day to invest the time to make it work.  That is definitely something you can see yourself easily implementing, even continuing after you meet this financial goal.  Can you see yourself cutting out a daily coffee out, possibly finding new ways to save on a date with your spouse or new and creative ways to have fun with the whole family?  Just making small changes like these will help you reach your 2% reduction quickly while helping your family not feel like you are cutting out 75% of your budget while sitting home and pouting.  Perhaps after evaluating your spending with your budget tracking, you have realized some reckless spending that will be really easy to cut to get you to that 2% goal that first month.  One our our goals is to provide you with creative tips and solutions you can easily implement to help you save on things you are already doing or giving you cheaper options while still having fun together as a family!

#4. Increase income each month by 2% (“found money” goes into savings/debt)
You might wonder why we inserted this next part to our process.  Well, first its because we found that combining the small savings with the small amount of additional income add up really quickly.  You can see the math below, but if your income was approximately $3,500 and your expenses were about $3,000 and you applied this plan, the very first month you will give an additional $130 more than you would have had without this plan.  And if you look at that math, when you intentionally take that $500 you would have had anyway, that gives you a total of $630 to throw at your debt or savings just for that first month!

But before we get ahead of ourselves, we want to really focus on why you continue to increase your income.  We heard a very wise man at a conference state a seemingly obvious fact just a couple of years ago.  He stated that the true definition of building wealth is making sure that your expenses are less than your income.  That sounds simple, doesn’t it?  We’re not trying to give you a “get rich quick” tip here, but when you can add to your income while dropping your expenses, you’ll see just how quickly that adds up to more left over – meaning more to pay off debt or add to your savings, which really means getting closer to achieving your financial goals and ultimately your overall goals that you have for your family and even future generations.  We’re learning more every day just how much of a tool that money can be – whether its for being able to give more or having more at your disposal to reach the goals you have set out for your family.  Its just a fact that tool is really important no matter how much we want to deny it.

We are continuing to build not only our list of over 100 ways to earn extra income, but also continue expanding each one to share tips to help your family.  We are not assuming that you will just go get another job to earn an hourly rate, but rather find creative ways to work together as a family to accomplish this part of the process.  We will never forget when we started delivering newspapers with our baby girl in the back seat of our car.  We remember delivering phone books and then becoming even more creative in how we used our skills to continue increasing our income.  And that income went towards a good chuck of paying off our $100K of consumer debt.  But what we continue to want you to hear and understand is that first paycheck from delivering newspapers didn’t even come close to cutting into our debt significantly.  But each month, as that amount grew in combination with our cuts in our spending, it did quickly add up over time.

#5. Each subsequent month will be decreased/increased by 2% over the reality of the prior month
Another significant difference you’ll find in our plan is that we understand this is a learning process and the reality that things are not always going to go to plan.  With that, the next step will be to decrease your spending by 2% compared to your actual spending from the prior month.  Each month will be an incremental change over what really happened the month before.  What this does is encourage you to keep going.  When you experience a bad month and couldn’t quite meet your 2% goal the month before, the last thing you need to do is make next month’s goal that much more impossible to meet.  Each month you are attempting to be a bit better than the reality of the month before – the real month before – not the planned or goal month.

Do you see how this can become an encouragement to you and your family?  You are not trying to compound failure upon failure, but instead setting each month up as its own micro-goal.  If you meet your expected goal amounts, then great!  If you don’t, try again next month – but as an achievable goal, not trying to make up lost ground from the month before on top of more.

This doesn’t just apply to your spending, but towards setting your goals for your extra income as well!  We were asked a few months ago about what you do if you don’t earn an extra 2%, but you earn 4-5 times that much.  Well, first of all our response was to rejoice at the blessing of the additional income that month and then to set your goal as 2% more on top of that – that’s a good problem to have.   And likewise, if you can’t quite make an additional 2% more on any given month, then find out where you were at and then try to add on top of it next month.

Let’s check out an example:

Let’s follow each step through this process of a family that used this approach.  To help you understand, we’ll just follow each of the points in the process.

1. Track your expenses and earnings over a period of 1-3 months – This family actually had their data in their bank and credit card statements, making it easy for them to gather this type of data.
2. Create your baseline budget based off of reality (the results you found in #1) – This family established their total income for their “baseline month” as $3,500 and their total expenses as $3,000.  This is a good place to start as the income does exceed the expenses.
3. Decrease spending each month by 2% (“found money” goes into savings/debt) – You see that the 2% decrease in spending worked out to be $2,940 – a total of $60 needed to cut out of their budget.  We always encourage looking at your grocery bill (its great to look at the expenses you used to find the totals in #1 as it really gives you great visibility into what you can cut).  And although they tried, the first month was a little tough and their expenses actually increased by $17.  That’s ok – all is not lost!
4. Increase income each month by 2% (“found money” goes into savings/debt) – The family planned to increase their budget by 2% just by offering to clean houses for their friends and family members.  But what was awesome is instead of a planned $70 additional income necessary, they exceeded their first month of income by $50 for a total of $120 of extra income – great job!
5. Each subsequent month will be decreased/increased by 2% over the actuals (or reality) of the prior month – Here’s the beauty of this plan.  Although this family didn’t quite meet their expenses, after decreasing spending by 2% of the actuals of the prior month, you note the second month of spending is still less than the baseline.  Or to put it another way, progress is being made but the family is not stressing over it.  And in the end, this family actually had $163 more the first month to place towards their goal (debt in this case) with the planned goal of an extra $294.54 the second month as compared to the base month.

We hope you can see the value of working through this plan.  We can only state that it was the instrumental plan that we used in paying off over $100K in consumer debt and that we use it even today in working towards our financial goals.  Obviously as time goes on there will be a limit to how much you can cut from your spending as there will be a budget-decreasing ceiling, meaning you can’t forever cut 2% out of your budget – you will eventually hit your rock-bottom budget and you will know as a family when you hit that. On the other hand, there doesn’t necessarily need to be a 2% income-increasing ceiling as there can always be more ideas on how to generate that income – just be creative with your family.

Our encouragement is to work through this together and establishing long-term spending habits that you can maintain.   We encourage you to even look towards long-term income strategies that you might be able to turn into a more permanent form of income.  But we especially hope you see that the upfront, incremental, small change can turn into some significant change later.

We were enjoying dinner together as a family a couple of nights ago and Cassie started screaming.  I thought she was on The Price is Right and had just won the showcase – in fact, from her response, I thought she had won the double showcase!!  Just why was she screaming so excitedly?  I was wondering the same thing.   Then she started screaming, “Its been two years!”, and I knew exactly what she was referring to.  Yes, its been two years, actually on April 3, that we’ve been debt-free (at least outside of our mortgage).  In fact, we announced it just over two years ago on our site when we paid off that last card.  No second mortgages, no rolling the debt into another loan…just paying it off using the process that we’ve been announcing the last couple of weeks!

Its amazing and almost indescribable just how much weight was lifted off our shoulders that day.  We’ve been trying to describe just how much despair and anguish we lived through as we struggled day in and day out to work our way out of our debt.  And part of our goal is to let you know that we know the pain.  We know the hopelessness.  We know what its like to not see the light at the end of the tunnel.  But by the grace of God and working through seven years of learning how to get out of it, we made that announcement on April 3, 2010 that truly changed our lives.

So what are we going to do to celebrate?  We’re going to celebrate with a giveaway of course – and no, we didn’t go into debt to do it!   We know how must you loved our last $100 Sears giveaway.  The response was outstanding!  So we thought we would do it again.  Why not give you another opportunity to enter to win?!  We are excited because one of you that probably entered last time will win a $100 Sears gift card – we hope you love it!
