Today we are going to be talking about saving big money on the area of razors. Just this past week, the thoughts of a good clean shave came back into mind. You see, it’s been a long, blistery winter here and we all know that a least favorite activity for many in the winter is to shave!
Yes, I certainly am in that camp and I will admit it.
But this past week, we woke up and it was a beautiful day and we just wanted to work outside and be outside. So, I ran to my closet (just like my kids) and searched for some warmer weather clothing. Shook the dust off and put them on….only to realize that I really wasn’t dressed for being outside in public! In fact, this meme popped up on my Facebook wall as my friend who posted it must have had the same experience that day 🙂
This was also one of the first years in years that I could not run down to storage and grab another razor. In our past, extreme couponing days we had quite a collection of razors. But we haven’t played the coupon game for a long time. This is a lengthier discussion for another day but in a nutshell – we live a healthier food life making from scratch and buying in bulk. All the razors we used to have were from playing the drugstore games year ago, which you have to be seriously committed to in order for it to work. Well that large supply we had built up for our personal care meant we were set for years…until this year when that supply had finally been used up.
So, we finally ran out of razors, except some cheap disposable razors – you know the ones that come with 6 in a pack in a plastic bag. I used one of these and it was a horrible mess. I had battle wounds after shaving one leg. After many years of using the expensive, high quality razors for so long, I did not realize how terrible these razors were. They simply were not an option. I actually threw them out (after storing them in my storage for years for the day I would need them)!
Going to the drugstore now without my register rewards, coupons and meticulously planned trip and shopping before anyone else hits the store and the supply is gone…was going to be quite painful and I really don’t want to start the drugstore game again just to get those razors for a few bucks. It’s a never ending cycle, and a headache that is not worth it to me at this point in my life with all of the alternatives for saving money we have discovered.
And that’s what I want to share with you now – one of those alternatives!
Our Razors By Mail Subscriptions Experience
We have heard about and seen some of the “by mail razor subscriptions.” But, the question we’ve always asked are whether they really affordable and are they really good quality?
When I first heard about razors by mail subscriptions, I thought it was a little silly. I mean are people in the desperate of a need to have a fresh, sharp, high quality razor regularly? It makes you wonder if a toilet paper subscription would be just as beneficial (wait, that’s where Amazon’s Subscribe and Save comes in and our TP is delivered to our door ;)).
Well, I can now say that we have tried it! And it really is all that it is cracked up to be. We received a men’s starter kit and the women’s razors as well from 99CentRazor.
Honestly, I cannot believe that the refill heads are only $0.99! That is an amazing deal. The blades are very similar to those like Venus or similar quality blade. Trust me, I have tried all of the brands after my years of playing the drugstore game. I can compare and give an honest opinion about the quality because I have literally tried them all! And I really liked the $0.99 razor blades! They worked just as well and just as slick as the big expensive ones.
I also don’t use fancy shaving creams. I cannot justify the expense and if you have a good razor, you shouldn’t need to. I just use a bar of soap or a cheap bottle of conditioner. That means that the razor and blades have to be that much better to make up for the lack of a good shaving cream. My legs know when a bad blade is in hand.
After I tried my affordable order by mail razor, Alex gave his a whirl. He also had a great experience and his blades were also only $0.99! He said that his razor is compared to most all of the fancy razors out there. There’s only one or two that would perhaps beat this one as far as performance (and like me, he’s tried them all!), but the price is unbeatable and so the performance is dwarfed in comparison. He compared this razor to the Gillette Fusion or Mach3 razors, but these name brands are many times more the price!
How Does a Razor Subscription Work?
Well, there are two options.
The first is a one-time purchase of a men’s or women’s shaving set. If you want to try their blades and razors and give it a whirl, you can do this. It’s not the most affordable way to go and it is priced at right around the razors in the store if you were to go now without discounts and by a nicer razor kit.
However, the better deal is to sign-up for a subscription service and get the blades (refill heads) for only $0.99 each delivered regularly to your door. With this option, you get the handle for free, which is like the starter kit mentioned above. You can also choose your frequency. You can also cancel at any time.
We do not go through razors quickly. So choosing to receive 4 blades every 3-months is PERFECT for us! And the shipping appears to be a flat $4. So every 3 months, we will be billed $11.92 and receive 8 total high quality blades (with free handles). For $3.96 each, we have 4 refill blades each with one free handle each. We call it the “Couple’s Subscription!” 🙂
Part of the Proceeds to Benefit Shelter Pets
Even better..when we visited the 99CentRazor site, we noticed that they support a non-profit. We love supporting non-profits and as we have shared on our site here that we donate a portion of our proceeds from our site here to charity (providing free medical care for mommies and their children in underprivileged areas), 99CentRazor does the same, but helping shelter pets! Each purchase made on their site, $0.99 of it is donated to S.T.A.R.T. Rescue for pets.
Well, there you have it! We personally think this is a smart move in the frugal direction. Start with a subscription and cancel at any time and save money and effort.
Have you tried a razor subscription before? Have you tried 99CentRazor yet? We’d love to get your thoughts too!
