We stumbled upon a very interesting article titled “Why I am Okay With Shopping on Thanksgiving.”
We understand and sympathize with what our friend Jen is trying to say regarding family traditions and gratefulness, we hope that this isn’t done just one day a year as well but celebrated, nurtured and remembered all year too. But we don’t agree with the conclusion of basically eliminating a holiday because it should be practiced all year anyway, and one that is being eliminated by retailers swallowing it up.
Thanksgiving DOES mean something, it has been a time for our whole nation to celebrate those family traditions and gratitude at the same time and shouldn’t be overthrown for retailers to be in the black one day earlier.
In addition, it is robbing thousands of the working families of that special time that they most likely could have all had off together. I know that for our own family, we are actually all able to gather on this one day because everyone has it off at the same time – the only day we could. We don’t get that privilege at other times of the year (except maybe Christmas) because someone has to work no matter the celebration. Well, we just took one more possible day away from millions.
I like shopping for great deals if I am planned and my budget can necessitate it. We often use Black Friday not to get wants or load up on Christmas, but almost always for our families needs if a “new” version of that need is within the budget and a great deal – and often times, many of those needs are a super deal that day. We have never liked what Black Friday represents even the day after Thanksgiving, but at least it wasn’t Thanksgiving.
Today, it feels like we are crossing a whole new line and one that is so sad to see being crossed earlier and earlier each year. It will seriously be a short matter of time before the holiday becomes extinct.
We won’t be shopping on Thanksgiving ourselves.
Well, enough from us – head on over to read Jen’s article on “Why I am Okay With Shopping on Thanksgiving
