Guest Post on Quiet Times for Kids Studies (Part 2): Getting Your Kids to Read the Bible

Note from The Thrifty Couple:  Just like we said last week, we are very excited about this guest post from Andie, mother of 8 (one still in the bun for just three days!).  This will be a 3-part series featured during the next three Thursdays for the month of June! June and summertime is a great time to implement something like this to get into the habit of children having quiet times so that when the busyness of fall hits, it will be easier to continue with this.  We’ve had the opportunity to meet Andie, the author of Quiet Time for Kids, and she is a very kind and genuine person that has a lot of passion about the subject of kids engaging in personal Bible study time and has some wonderful ideas and resources she’s created for each of us! In addition, we asked her if she would provide our amazing readers a discount and she has – you can get these Bible Studies for only $3 each after coupon code (normally $6)!! Here’s part 2 of 3 in her guest post series. Enjoy!

In my last post I shared a simple idea that we use to encourage each of our older children to have a personal Bible study time each day. Today I want to share how this simple idea because a flourishing family business for us.

Nearly six years ago we decided, after much prayer and thought, to educate our children at home.  At the time we only had two little ones and deciding to homeschool was quite a radical choice in our mind.  Over the course of the next few years, God used that decision to open up our hearts to a very different way of thinking regarding the discipleship and training of our children – a more Biblical way of thinking.  Things in our life began changing very rapidly and God sent five more little blessing in quick succession!  As we were simply trying to keep our heads above the water adjusting to these many changes, we began to see our older two children growing and maturing right before our eyes.  Along with this growth, we noticed a deep need to fill their minds and spirits with Truth and meat from God’s Word and not just simply fill their time while Mama was busy meeting the needs of the little ones.

A fun homeschool field trip with all my little ones in toe – busy days!

Things were easier when we first began this home schooling journey, but as more children came, and as we had to find more ways to fit them into our daily schedule, we became motivated to find ways for the older children to spend independent learning time productively.  Our definition and understanding of education began to broaden as we realized that character had to be paramount in the discipleship of our children.  While we make it a practice to have a time of family worship reading the Bible together in our family, we also wanted our children to be spending time in God’s Word alone as well.  Realizing these two goals in our family is what led us to create the Bible Studies I shared with you in my last post.
About the time that we were seeing great fruit from encouraging our children to have a personal Bible Study time with the Lord, I also began to feel burdened to somehow contribute to our family economy in the spirit of Proverbs 31. It seemed a natural fit to take something I already was passionate about, encouraging children to study the Bible, and turn it into an online business that would bless our family. I began to brainstorm various ideas for Bible studies on many topics from peacemaking in the home to seasonal holiday studies. Of course I would thoroughly test every study with my own kids at home…

It has only been about two years that we have been doing these studies and already they have became a treasured keepsake to see their sweet handwriting in the letters to Jesus they wrote each day. I mentioned the ‘Animals in the Bible’ Study that is available as a free sample on our website if you are interested in the studies but want to see and try a sample first. This is a five day Bible study on a topic every child seems to love – animals! Visit our website and click on the ‘free download’ link to get your copy.

In my next post I will share with you how to create a Bible Study notebook for your child! Stay tuned!

Alex & Cassie,

What a great resource! I don’t have children yet, but my husband and I are waiting on God’s blessing of children. I am so excited that you have introduced me to this sight!

Blessings!
