The Joys of Summer as a Kid: What a Mess

by Alex on May 30, 2012

Yesterday, I saw Alex’s arm….. “How did you get that mud on your arm?”  He looked at it and had no clue.  Then our 8-eight year old jumps up from the couch (in the middle of tearing through her 9th Mandie book in 6 days) and eager to get her nose out of her mystery series and right into a real-life mystery.  She sprang at the opportunity to help!

Honestly, it didn’t take long to figure out what was going on……………..

Muddy footprints, muddy light switches, muddy sinks…… but no muddy kids.  Until……

At that point we figured there wasn’t much point to stop the mayhem, err mess, and let them have at it.  Here’s a few pictures of the aftermath:

Muddy sliding door, muddy handles, a muddied graffiti fence and another muddy child! See they found this muddy puddle under the fence and were digging like dogs and creating a beaver’s nest apparently with sticks and mud between the layers.   It honestly lasted for hours, so I really don’t think I minded the mess (any mom of several kids probably knows what I am talking about)! :)

Oh the creativity.  Oh the joys of summer!  Oh the joys of messes from very active and curious 5 and 7 year olds!

This is a mess, not to mention what the showers looked like afterwards too -  but fun was had by all (except mom :) ).

How’s the start to your summer going?

I am a mom of 3 and would love time to myself IF I knew exactly where my kids are at all times and know they are with an adult. 5 year olds outside by themselves? Can’t let that happen in my over-pertective head. I have an 8 year old and I do not let him go outside without me unless it is to get the mail. How do you just let go and let them go on their own? I would sure like to know. I guess I don’t feel that safe in our neighborhood to do so.

LOL- I wasn’t getting time alone – I had the baby and three-year old with me in the house. But when my kids are outside, I have the windows open and am constantly checking on them in the backyard and can continuously hear them. Perhaps we are in a much safer neighborhood than you, but I wouldn’t ever trust kids outside by themselves in any neighborhood even in our own backyard and would never advise doing so, no matter how safe. I too am paranoid :) It was a post meant to be lighthearted fun about kids having summer fun and maybe the post doesn’t emphasize that it was a very short amount of time before I realized that they were playing with mud and just let them have at it, while keeping an eye on them! Alex also works from home and so we are actually both having a constant eye on them which is a blessing to have two-adults on constant watch. :)
